Coveted Crib: A Mansion in the Bronx

Joyce Cohen's article for the New York Times, Lots of Home Work, tells the story of a run-down, gem-in-the-rough 16-room mansion in the Bronx that a young family bought for the rather low, low price of $675,000. The home will require at least another $200,000 of renovations, including rewiring and reinforcing of the foundation. But with original details like tin ceilings, carved fireplaces, and stone sculptures, I'd say this house is well worth the effort. Read the article for the whole story on this house.

That is stunning - I'd love to see pictures of it when they are finished. Money can't buy the kind of character and attention to detail that house has.

before I married my husband, he was a caretaker for a mansion like that in philly. it even had an elevator! but it's definitely not for me. good luck to them though.. that's alot of time and money.

I wish them the best of luck with this property. Fixer-uppers are enchanting when they are gems but sometimes they can be more of a headache than they are worth.

beautiful...i just love this historic placeswe used to live in this great mansion here in chicago called the kent http://theplussizediva.blogspot.com/2006/12/memories.htmland i miss it so much!and i lived in harlem and you can't a shell for less than 500,000 that would need probably an additional 500,000 to make something of it..

beautiful...i just love this historic places we used to live in this great mansion here in chicago called the kent http://theplussizediva.blogspot.com/2006/12/memories.html and i miss it so much! and i lived in harlem and you can't a shell for less than 500,000 that would need probably an additional 500,000 to make something of it..

Nice story but I don't think I would want to invest in a property in need of crucial repairs. They should've settled for the brownstone in Harlem considering they're overall expense from the purchase to the repairs of the home.
