My grandmother was the ultimate creative, painfully chic and actually an interior designer herself. So, it didn't come as a surprise when she revamped this French door in her living room (which leads to a rarely used closet), using it to frame black-and-white family photos. She had mattes made to border each photo, or each arrangement of photos, and placed them behind the glass door panes. Then, she had a piece of plywood cut to size, and secured to the door to keep it all in place. It was the sort of great idea that needed to be well executed to succeed, and I think it did. The fact that she used black-and-white family photographs made it all the more nostalgic, timeless, and cohesive. Somehow I don't think color photographs would triumph there. What do you think?

Such a neat idea...
1I wish you would show more of the room! The textured wallpaper is to die for! (plus, the hint of that upholstered chair is also intriguing). What a stylish grandmother!
2Thanks, Morgs! It is a beautiful room, I wish I had more photos. The wallpaper is called "grasscloth." It's available in a range of colors and is actually quite affordable.
3I like this! I think its great.
4I love black and white photography, so I think it looks perfect!
CasaSugar,
What does the BACK of the door look like? Did your Grandmother use one big piece of plywood, or individual pieces for each frame? How was the plywood secured? Nailed down?
BTW, I think your Grandmother's idea is wonderful -- functional and creative. It's something I would love to copy for my home. That's why I'm asking so many questions.
5I Love this idea! your grandma is very creative!
6WOW! What a cool way to display family photos. I love it!
7Hi GlowingMoon,
8The back of the door is just one big piece of plywood (which was stained to match) with a semicircle cut out for the door handle, just screwed in. Honestly you probably wouldn't notice the difference, it just looks like a normal door on the backside.

This is so clever! Thanks for sharing. I thought about doing something like this in my house and now maybe I should just try it.
9My bedroom in my apartment my senior year in college had French doors on it. I needed to make the doors more opaque for obvious reasons (roommates, etc), so I did something very similar to this. I used colored photos and it looked fine, although a bit less refined. I loved how it looked simple from the outside but very personalized from the inside.
10This would also look great hanging sideways over a sofa.
