College in the Round: A Circular Copenhagen Dorm Hall

College dorm rooms are notorious for being small, cramped, and boring — but Copenhagen's Tietgen Student Hall defies all the typical clichés. Named after Danish financier C.F. Tietgen, a major player in the Danish industrial revolution, the structure was built in 2005 with specific goals in mind: to foster a sense of community among nearly 400 students and to create consistent, equal living conditions for each resident. The solution? A seven-story, circular building.

Designed by architects Lundgaard & Tranberg, the property is striking for both its shape and for the raw materials that were used in its construction. While the outside was made with copper-based alloy tombac and oak, the indoor areas feature concrete accents, birch-veneer-lined walls, and magnesite floors. Keep reading to look inside the structure and learn more about this innovative student hall.
