Recessed lighting is a great built-in feature of many homes, but it shouldn't be your home's only source of lighting. Different tasks require different sources of lighting. So most rooms should have a mix of ceiling fixtures, table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and low-hanging pendants or chandeliers.
If your home's recessed lighting doesn't suit the purposes of your room, you can easily change the fixture out with what's called a recessed can light conversion kit. Ballard Design's Instant Pendant Light Adapter ($39) is a classic design with an antique bronze ceiling canopy that conceals the can, if you want to replace your fixture with a pendant. But The Can Converter sells products which will convert your recessed lighting into any sort of fixture, be it a ceiling fan, flush mount, chandelier, etc.
