Love It or Hate It? Church Pews at Home

At an antique store a couple of weeks ago I saw two beautiful, old, wood church pews. The quality of the wood, the intricacy of their carvings, and the ages of the pieces lent them to be a bit out of my price range, but I've been thinking about ways they could be used in my own abode ever since. I remembered this bohemian home that managed to incorporate a gorgeous Gothic pew into its modern space. I think a low one would look amazing as a window seat of sorts in my living room. Would you like to have this furnishing in your home? Would it be your style? Or is it too sacrilegious — or too religious — for you?

We live in a 105 year old house, and find that church pews work great for our decor and seating needs. I currently have two in the house that are both about 10' long. They are very plain and simple, with red woven material covering the cushioned seats - just the same way they were when they were removed from the sanctuary. I have one in our dining room along a long wall, and the other in my kitchen along the wall that leads to our back deck. Both of these rooms always beg for more seating (or a good place to set groceries when you come home from the store), so it was just natural that we put the pews there. They're also great conversation pieces. I'd much rather see these neat pieces of furniture go to good use like this as opposed to being tossed or destroyed in the trash. Sacrilegious? No. Stylish? Yes.

My mom had a long one on our front porch for years. It was perfect, because our porch was so long but not very deep. Hers was very simple, not as ornate as the one pictured, so many people didn't even realize it was a pew.

I would have never thought to do that but it looks amazing when you have a large amount of space so that it can be a focal point

When my parish renovated our church back in the 1970s, all the parishioners were invited to salvage whatever they wanted. I currently use my pew as a bookshelf for my sewing/design library. I have been offered $200 sight unseen for the pew, but wouldn't part with it for ANY money. It's a wonderful accent for my studio, esp given where it came from.

It's beautiful.... I, myself, have been looking for church pews.... but, alas.... I have not been fortunate enough to have found one yet.... I keep waiting tho..... I'll fall over one soon enough, I"m sure.....
