Casa Quickie: Keep It at 68 Degrees

If you're concerned about keeping a green home, energy efficiency goes hand in hand with eco home products and concepts. Here's an easy way to keep your house as energy efficient as possible.

To save money on heating, it's generally recommended that you try to keep your thermostat set at a reasonable 68 degrees. Every degree warmer you set your thermostat will increase your energy use by six to eight percent, which also means a rise in your heating bill. So, instead of notching up the thermostat, take a quick tip from me and layer up instead.

I live in the midwest and keep mine about 64/65. Sometimes 68 to get rid of the early morning chill, but right back down to 64/65. While growing up my mom kept our house at 60 overnight.

It's so humid here that cold feels REALLY cold. I can tolerate 70, with tons of layers on inside the house, but I'm most comfortable at 72 (and that's not prancing around scantily clothed).

I like 75. I can't go under 70 or I would feel like I'm freezing. I've always been that way though. I'm always cold but I understand my health problem :) People that visit me are always in a rush to leave because they feel overheated. But I would rather pay the bill than feel freezing and uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to move around my home if I felt cold.

tarabara, If I were from Hawaii, I don't think I could keep it at low as I do! I'm from Cleveland - used to the cold breezy snowy winters. I don't love keeping it low, but my house is 80 years old, and if I turn up the heat, I just donate it to the outdoors, so we bundle for a few months...

Wow...I applaud you guys for keeping it well under 68 degrees!! I tried last year to no avail. Now we keep it at around 70. I think maybe growing up in Hawaii hasn't helped me cope with the cold!

We did 60F in the day 50F at night for a year but it aggravated my raynauds. Went to 69F day and 50F night when we moved a bit south, and it works well, though the sick parents who live with us think it's freezing and keep their room at 80F+ in the day.

Us too cahserc. We keep it at 60-62 when we are there and awake. 58 for sleeping. We have a heated blanket on our bed to keep us warm!

We generally keep ours around 72 and run a humidifier to make it seem warmer. If I could keep it lower, I would, but even layers don't cut the chill for my husband, who has arthritis times three! Our heat went out and we managed to keep it around 65 with a space heater and by stuffing towels into the windows and doors, but even with him bundled up it was creaky pain city for days after. :(

Whew! I would die of heatstroke if we kept the thermostat at 68! (And we live in the Midwest) (And I'm not menopausal) I won't reveal the temp we use for sleeping as it might insight riots, but let's just say it's MUCH below 68.
