The New York Times recently ran an article called "Handmade 2.0" by Rob Walker in its magazine. The article discusses the recent popularity of sites such as Etsy and the phenomenon of the handmade pledge. While crafting has been around forever, the NYT reports that, "the new wave of crafters infused uncool-sounding domestic skills like knitting and sewing with a postpunk attitude that revolved partly around mall-rejecting self-sufficiency."
While I'm all for rejecting some mall-bought gifts, I have to say that I've never thought domestic skills were uncool. Check out the whole article yourself, and decide what you think about the NYT's take on the crafting trend.
