Brian Patrick Flynn of Decor Demon and HGTV.com Launch Designer DIY Webisodes
Brian Patrick Flynn of Decor Demon Tells Us Why His New Collaboration With HGTV Would Make Kevin Costner Proud!
I just got word that interior decorator Brian Patrick Flynn, aka Decor Demon, is teaming up with HGTV.com on a new series of DIY, designer-based webisodes, and the first of many went live today! In the first webisode, Brian shows us how to make a photo mural kitchen backsplash, and there's also a helpful step-by-step tutorial with all the necessary supplies listed. I was curious about how this all came about, so I asked Brian to do a little interview with me. Check out our Q&A below!
CasaSugar: Decor Demon and HGTV.com are totally different both in style, readership, and in content. How did this collaboration come about?
Brian Flynn: Did you ever see that movie Field of Dreams, where the field [I think] keeps whispering "If you build it, they will come?" to Kevin Costner? Well, neither did I, but I do recall people reciting that particular line incessantly throughout the 1990s. That's kinda how this happened. After months of planning, writing checks and ruining my clothes with paint, I launched Decor Demon and apparently, they did indeed come. Months later, offers, speaking panels, and partnerships magically appeared. I think the initial conversation started with the site's vice president after a panel discussion at Westweek, a design event at the Pacific Design Center.
CS: How will the HGTV.com series be different from the Decor Demon webisodes?
BF: While the Decor Demon webisodes are breakdowns of high-meets-low designer spaces, the ones on hgtv.com are project-based. For example, I may knock out an entire bachelor pad over a few months for Decor Demon, then get with the production company to shoot it all, then break it down room by room with an overall dark and edgy aesthetic. On HGTV.com, we stick with ONE small project best described as "Designer DIY," then shoot how to do that one project from start to finish. I'm really proud of the aesthetic, it's beautifully lit with long, fluid camera movements. Between the Decor Demon webisodes housed on decordemon.com and these strictly made for HGTV.com, I've got the best of both worlds: edgy, dark, and film-noir-esque on my site, then light, airy, and editorial on theirs.

CS: Is there any cross-over between existing image-based content on Decor Demon and the new video content on HGTV.com?
BF: Yes, oh heavens, yes! A good amount of my preexisting projects strictly shot as photographs are being turned into live action versions; however, each webisode will also have its own step-by-step article counterpart shot by my Decor Demon photographer, Sarah Dorio. Some of the projects being revisited as video: (a) using mismatched dining room chairs, then updating them with paint and upholstery to work as a cohesive set (b) simple steps to turn a carport into an outdoor living room (c) how to create a mobile garden (d) updating Ikea "Billy" bookcases to look like a pricey built-in.
CS: The project for the first HGTV.com webisode is brand-new but based on something you'd done on Decor Demon, right?
BF: Yep! For some reason, people seem to ask most about my photography walls. Since I detest clutter, I often choose ONE personal image, then have it turned into a wall-size mural. We took this concept and adapted it into the kitchen as an affordable backsplash alternative. It truly was easy to do. And for all the naysayers ready to comment "it's awful for resale value," the primer used to install it makes it super easy to take down without messing up drywall . . . so there. Take a look and see for yourself.
Check out the photos below for a sneak peek of the webisodes, and be sure to watch the first webisode!
