A Bird-Themed Cake Stand, Three Ways: One Beautiful Buy, 2 Easy DIYs

My sister is getting married in August, so I've been spending a lot of time visiting wedding blogs and poking around BHLDN's website. One item that recently caught my eye was this lovely Barn Swallow Pedestal.

Featuring a flock of fork-tailed fliers darting about on a hand-painted platter, it seems like a perfect match for her vintage-inspired, country wedding. But at $60 - $100 per cake stand, I don't think that she'll be willing to add a half dozen of these cake stands to her dessert table.

If you feel the same way about the price, good news — I have two simple DIYs that will save you a lot of money! For the cake stand DIYs, just keep reading.

For the first DIY, purchase a Vintage Silver Candlestick ($8). Using a heavy-duty epoxy, glue the candlestick to this Lacy Bird Hand Illustrated Plate ($22). For a little work, you've cut your cake stand price in half!

Of course, you can get a little craftier and slice your price point even further.

Head to the flea market or thrift store to find candlesticks and plain white plates. On average, you'll probably spend about $3 or less for a plate and candlestick. Then, using Folk Art Enamel Acrylic Paint ($2.79), carefully apply the paint to the Swallow Stencil ($2.50). Use a heavy-duty epoxy to secure the plate to the candlestick, and let dry. For less than $10, you've created a food-safe cake stand, and you can create a half dozen of these on a tight budget.

Have you created something similar for a wedding or party? What tips can you offer potential DIYing party planners or brides who are interested in this project?
