I've brought up the idea of using the garage for additional living space, so when I ran across the garage reno on Sunset, I knew I had to share the fabulous results with you. Architect Jonathan Feldman was brought in to help expand a San Francisco, CA, family's living space by using their garage. While a garage is a relative luxury in San Francisco, it's not actually a necessity, especially when the space can be used for something much better than simply storing an auto.

Feldman's smart design turned the underutilized garage into a multi-functioning space for the entire family. The garage added an additional 400 square feet, which included room for an office, a guest bedroom, and a bath. It looks absolutely amazing. This is legal in San Francisco?
Also, from my experience, street parking may be very, very hard to come by. I'm surprised this family gave up their garage.
1I wish I had a garage to underutilize -- I would utilize the heck out of it!
2Before I moved to the East Bay, I had a Volvo stationwagon that I streetparked in SF, and while it was a little inconvenient to move it for streetsweeping, it wasn't a biggie (and this was in a primo-parking hood). I guess I'd rather have more living space than a garage, personally. Plus, I got really, really good at parallel parking!
3I would so love to have the additional living space...unfortunately, I don't have a garage to do this with!! LOL!
4i'd be happy with this being my whole house nevermind additional living space.
5i love the whole open plan feel and the bedroom being like a minstrel gallery that you can look down onto the rest of the space from.
It appears they have a decent sized driveway to park any cars in, or am I seeing things? I would give up a garage if I had a driveway. I haven't parked my car in a garage since moving out of my parents house, so this wouldn't be a big deal to me.
And Casa! Woohoo for Volvo drivers! I have a 240 wagon and I LOVE it!
6same with me, c4rolin3. i would just love having this being my actual home!
