Way back in early September, I ordered a sofa and chair from Macy's. I'd been looking for a new sofa for several months, and with the killer deals at Macy's annual Columbus Day Sale, I took advantage of the reduced prices on furniture and grabbed the Corona sofa and chair, whose modern lines and dark color appealed to both my design sensibilities and my dog ownership. Unfortunately, as is often the case with ordering furniture online, the pieces I wanted were on backorder, and they wouldn't arrive in the warehouse until November.

When I called Macy's in November to check on the status of my furniture, I was dismayed to learn that my furniture was again on backorder! The nice woman on the phone, who took my annoyed questions in stride, told me to call back in two weeks. Luckily, two weeks later the furniture was in the warehouse, and we were able to set up a delivery date. Macy's gave me a three-hour window within which their delivery guys would arrive, and I headed home early from work one afternoon to meet them.
The Macy's deliverymen arrived well within the allotted time and worked quickly. From arrival to departure, they were at the home for no more than 10 minutes! They were speedy and efficient, and the furniture had surprisingly little packaging — there was some plastic wrapping, and recyclable cardboard encasing the removable feet, but that was about it.
I'd recommend furniture delivery from Macy's or a similar retailer with a few caveats:
- Be prepared to wait several months for your furniture to be delivered.
- You may have to take time off of work to meet the delivery truck at your home.
- If you're easily frustrated by unforeseen delays, or if you need the furniture by a certain date, it may be better to buy new furniture directly from a shop that can deliver the furniture immediately.
What's your experience with furniture delivery been like? (And on a sidenote, no, that's not how we arranged our living room — it's just how it looked in the immediate aftermath!)

I hate waiting for my stuff!
1When we bought our couches, we always aked how long we would have to wait and if it was over 3 weeks we just walked out.
We didn't have anything to sit on so we didn't want to wait too long anyways.
I like that sofa! Nice, clean lines. Great color to play up or down.
2We had to opposite happen. My husband bought our sofa as a birthday surprise for me through a smaller chain store and didn't want it to be delivered before my birthday... but they delivered it two weeks early, even though the order stated when the sofa was to be shipped and delivered.
3However, my friend did order a sofa from Macy's and had the same thing happen to her... they kept back-ordering it until finally she had to call Macy's, yell at some manager and finally get it delivered.
I don't think I'd order furniture online, unless I was absolutely in love with it and I couldn't purchase it in a store. Otherwise, I prefer to do it the old-fashioned way.
I've ordered slipcovers online and home accents/decor, but that's it for me.
4i bought a new bed and dresser in early october. it is STILL NOT HERE. the company that manufacturers them had a problem at their factory, but hopefully it's "on it's way soon" *sigh*
5My mother had the best experince with Macy's. They had what she wanted in stock so they delivered within the week and the guys took like 10 minutes total!!! Sorry to hear about the delay it took with ur stuff BUT you have tolove the speedy delivery guys.
6With most large upholstered items like couches or chairs, it is not unusual to wait for manufacture, even if you order from a smaller retailer. When you think about it, it's not easy to stock items that people will want to customize with their own choice of color, fabric or wood trim.
7I've ordered furniture online and really haven't had any problems but ... none of the items were upholstered or backlogged due to production.
8Love the couch and chair, Casa!
9I've had great experiences with Target.com. I know it may not be the most fashionable place, but it has some good stuff for pretty cheap and they often have fast, free shipping (and they will email you discount codes every week if you sign up for the newsletter). The other nice thing is that if you don't like the item or if it is messed up you can return it to any Target store.
10I think the were worth waiting for. I like the lines and the color. I am not ready to pull the trigger on a living room set. Later...later...
11Ugh, when I moved a few years ago, I ordered a couch online, and had no couch for 4 months! It was very cute when it came, though.
12Nice couches, Casa!
I'm sure Ozzie likes 'em too. I have never ordered furniture
online before ... but your experience sounded like it was a-ok despite the long wait. Happy New Year!
13I'm sorry you had a not so perfect experience with Macy's. Mine was a little bit better. I ordered the Margaret set in August when there was a no tax, no interest sale. I didnt need the furniture to be delivered until November and Macy's agreed to hold my purchase (ordered by phone) and lock it in at the no tax, no interest price.
I was out of town when the furniture was delivered but the apartment management staff let the delivery men in and the set was delivered without a hitch. I love the set, it too has modern, sleek lines and great colors.
I've also ordered Shabby Chic furniture from Target.com and it was delivered within 3 days. I accidentally ordered one too many but Target was gracious enough to send UPS over to my door to pick it up the next day.
14lovin your vintage mid century modern console on the left!
15I'd need to see it in person, sit on it and such. Unless it was an AMAZING deal.
16I've never ordered furniture online, especially large, upholstered pieces, because I'm always afraid that I'll get it in my home and then find out that it's horribly uncomfortable! I shop based on looks AND comfort.
17I ordered two chairs from Room and Board. I loooove them, even though I had to wait about a month for them to be delievered. Room and Board has great stuff!
18Never order from Restoration Hardware online, its a disaster. However, a salesperson in-store can place an order for you and you will get it in short order. I learned the hard way.
19COngratulations on you new furniture! I know what it's like to slowly update.
20Great looking couch...I think you need a new area rug tho..
21i bought some ikea stuff online once and they came very quickly. i ordered 3 billy bookshelves. i ordered a tv online and it took a few weeks to come.
22i've waited 23 weeks for dining room chairs!
