Dear CasaSugar,
I love the Casa Craving Challenges and enjoy throwing together looks for other people's rooms, but now I have a dilemma of my own! My fiancé and I are in the process of furnishing our future apartment, and he's turning out to be much pickier than I am! I think every style/color has potential, but I'm not really sure how to reconcile his tastes into something that looks good. Basically, here's the problem: He bought a gray sofa but wants all dark wood furniture. There are cream walls and parquet flooring. There are strict rules against painting and nails. The dining, living, and study spaces all sort of flow into each other, so we've even got different shades of wood going on with all the furniture there. The only thing I could think to do right now is get dark-blue curtains and very dark-blue carpet tiles. What are some color schemes that would work and could incorporate both the grays and browns to make a cohesive apartment? We're on a super-tight budget, too, but I'd love to see some through-the-roof priced looks for inspiration as well as some practical pieces for purchase. (I'm trying to avoid glass tabletops, also.)
Thanks!
Nikkeeb

My husband pretty much lets me do whatever I want...he is so not into decorating. Works well for me!
The only room we did together in our townhouse is the finished basement...he spends a lot more time down there than me, so I wanted his input.
1Yikes. Sounds like a nightmare.
Maybe some area rugs, double layered curtains (sheer and then drapes that are pulled back -- they're not that expensive), plants or fake plants -- yes colorful pretty flowers -- in cool vases/containers. Just little accents to draw attention to other areas or brighten up the darkness.
Or...strip the varnish when he's not home???
You can also hang up pictures using those 3M strip hooks...they work and won't damage the walls.
I know I got some cool colored tables from Ikea...not your standard wood or glass....maybe you can check that out....and they weren't expensive.
You can also put wall art letters or sayings up...
All of these things are relatively cheap, check Target, Ikea, search online. Go walk around Bed, Bath & Beyond...I mean just by walking around you're bound to find things.
2haha, believe me princesstracy, i've had fantasies of stripping the furniture while he wasn't looking.
3I think gray, creme and brown would work well. I'd say stick with some neutrals and then bring in pops of color to satsify your tastes. It could be in the form of wall decals, lighting, pillows.

5check out this link at pottery barn, dark couch with really light walls and floors and it totally works. you should look at the vintage modern stuff at target, or maybe hit up an ikea. if you find a picture of something you like, its easy to recreate. you could easily get some artwork and pillows similar to these at pottery barn at a cheaper store like pier one and imitate the look.
