This Italianate townhouse, featured in This Old House was for years a brothel in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood, then sliced into seven poorly-constructed apartments, and has now been returned to its original form as a single-family dwelling, built in 1878. The current owners, the Wynnes, recently hired "architectural designer Amy Hall McNamara and general contractor Eric Maykranz, a specialist in old-home restoration" to remake the building to meet their family's needs.
Along the way they uncovered and restored many wonderful, original treasures like an intricate floor medallion, a once gas-lit light fixture, an ornate mahogany staircase, walnut-inlayed maple floors, several stained glass windows, and a trio of magnificently cased, tally bay windows. Mixed with quietly traditional decor, and a few updates like a marble-top double bathroom vanity, a built-in glass-front cabinet bar, a circular kitchen floor plan, and handsome, wide openings between the living and dining rooms, the house pays tribute to its 19th century heritage without being hindered by it. For a tour of the elegant rowhouse revival,

what a stunning home.
Beautiful!!! I love old rowhouses and brownstones. Such history and charm. This house is envy worthy.
OH it's sooo gorgeous! I so heart my Edwardian flat but definitely aspire to move up to something like this one day. What makes me bitter though, is that my parents had the chance to buy a place just like this, in the same neighborhood, in the seventies for $15,0000 (!!!) and they chose to spend that money on a trip to Italy instead! Can you imagine?? Now houses like it are around $3,000,000 +. Le sigh.
oops $15,000*
Wow it's amazing...
I'm squealing from my head to my toes right now. I want it. Bad.
What a gorgeous house! They did an excellent job restoring it. I love the fact that even though the kitchen is new, it looks like it belongs to the house. So many people make the kitchen way too modern in an old house and it looks stupid.
From outside it doesn't look so big, but there is so much air and space inside.. "Magic". I love these houses, but never actually seen one here in Finland or where I've travelled. Love to have one!
Well, I googled row house. We actually have row houses here (but not as beautiful as this one), so I should just shut up and start walking around with my eyes open...
Gorgeous! I love the history and the light.
that is so stunning- they did a fantastic job restoring it. In DC, we've got a lot of beauties as well and it's nice to see people take pride in them and keep them looking traditional and not too modern/contemp.
doesn't it look like the house from full house? or am I crazy?
Haha Diana172 - I was thinking the same thing!
FULL HOUSE!! I want this house so bad!
FULL HOUSE!! I want this house so bad!
the first thing that popped in my head was Full House!
its an exquisite house.
That is a lovely house. Beautiful inlaid floors & a wowzer of a staircase!
What a classically beautiful home!
That is an absolutely stunning home. I would love to live in a similarly renovated brownstone here in NYC.
so stunning...those floors are amazing!
Absolutely stunning! Beautiful colors.. timeless furniture pieces.. Fabulous!
You can't beat the old architecture! I'm so tired of new cookie-cutter homes popping up all over. Saving these old homes is a wonderful undertaking. Kudos for a job very well done!
Wowza. I am so green with envy right now! This really is my dream home. I especially love the bathroom with the old clawfoot tub and the stained glass windows.
