One of the great things about buying or selling items on Craigslist is that sometimes your run into some remarkable furniture and some remarkable people. (You also sometimes run into oddballs, but I welcome the occasional oddball as well.)
Take my latest Craigslist find, for example. I found an antique German coffee table advertised on Craigslist for the low, low price of $40. I loved its curved edges and end pieces that could be folded down or propped up. The delicate scrollwork on the interior edge, contrasting with the more modern, clean lines of the rest of the table, seemed to me to act as a bridge between antiquated formality and midcentury sparseness.
To find out more about this Craigslist adventure, just read more.
When I went to look at the table, it turned out that it was owned by Chris Howard, a professional furniture restorer and all-around nice guy. When Chris heard about my plans to restore the table, he suggested that I leave the stripping to him and that I could then stain and seal the table myself. I readily agreed, since stripping furniture isn't necessarily my idea of a good time.
To hear about how the stripping process went, tune in tomorrow for the next chapter of Adventures in Craigslisting!

That's a seriously cool table.
1Thats cool!
2fantastic find....I'm really jealous
3I've never bought anything from Craig's List before...probably won't either.
4I've bought a lot of things from Craigslist! They're all fantastic finds also. I think it depends on the area of the country that you live in and if you have some time to devote to it. Luckily, I can do it during my lunch hour at work and I have a large van at my disposal.
5Wow, that really is a wonderful find! I love it so much!
I can't say that I've done much with Craigslist, but I have done a lot with freecycle, and I've certainly gotten some really nice things through that--and for free! Again, with Craigslist, I think it depends on the area--but free is really nice--maybe too nice (since I've really gotta downsize)!
6Everything in my apartment, save for my bed, is from Craigslist. I've bought an Italian sofa ($200), an Andy Warhol rug ($125), a kitchen table and four chairs ($30), an antique dresser ($30), a 27" flat-panel HDTV ($400), a side table ($25) and a fancy wooden credenza ($400, originally $1k). It's such a good way to score bargains!
7Oh, and I should mention, a few months ago, Fab and I were walking around SOMA and we saw Craig himself. I totally geeked out.

9Craigslist is da bomb! I've scored some awesome finds and deals from moving sales - it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already
10Very unique...a great find!
11I've never done Craigslist ... eBay yes ... I don't know why I find Craigslist so daunting compared to eBay. I think it's great he'd strip it for you - I HATE stripping furniture - I have 3 peices I really need to do and have been putting off for years!
12same here casa...i can't think of a room in our house that isn't filled with craigslist finds! i can't wait to hear more about your craig-venture! and i would have geeked out if i saw craig too but you take the cake since you were actually able to identify him. i would have no idea what he looked like
13I've always shied away from Craig's List, but I must say... that looks like a pretty cool diamond in the rough!
14Great find, can't wait for the finished job.
15What a wonderful table! I love it. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
16Great find!!
17I think this is actually a poker or blackjack table. My grandmother had one years ago.
18My mom's best friend is in PR and she actually helped Craig develop CraigsList, they are still great friends today!
19I imagine a blackjack or poker table would be taller - for chairs.
20The one photographed above is a coffee table height.
