Unfortunately, if you rent, your landlord's insurance policy does not cover your personal property. Renter's insurance provides liability protection against accidents (injuries, property damage), as well as financially damaging events like fires and theft. Compared to the amount of property you could lose in these cases, rental insurance is pretty cheap. Have you ponied up to protect yourself?

I Know exactly what you mean casa. Unfortunately, I lost my last apartment to a fire and did not have renters insurance. On top of that the management personnel from the complex denied access to the apartment for almost three months due to that they had to survey the damage (major fire damage in kitchen and water damage to the rest of the apartment and the neighbors below). I'm currently living with my parents and at the same time apartment hunting; and this time I won't forget the renters insurance, especially in NYC where the majority of the buildings are pre-war!
