This west elm Tree Stump Stool ($149) caught my eye in the photo of west elm contest winner Kavi484's newly furnished digs. I hadn't seen it on west elm's website before, and wondered why. I asked our trusty west elm design expert, Angel, and she gave me the deets. The stool is made from a real tree, and is so heavy that it's only available in west elm stores. I'd seen tree stumps painted in a bold red high gloss paint and used similarly as stools in a recent issue of Domino and have since had the project on my to-do list. Would you buy the stool or try to do it yourself?

I'd definitely buy it. Do you know the price? I personally think they should look into making a faux one. I would buy it too.
1I like it but not $150 bucks worth. I agree a fake one would be better.
2I used to have something similar! but that was made with branches and trunks of a coffee plant with glass top ! It had a walnut varnish on it... and I loved it.... When we moved I gave it to my mom! I agree with Liss..150$ is too much and a faux would work better... I don't like the white on it!
3I like it. Its really pretty and has the branch thing going on except to a larger extent. I agree with everyone in say they should make a faux one, even though I think the real one in cool.
4Stumped about our stump? There seems to be some confusion surrounding the tree stump side table — let me help.
West elm actually has two different tree stump side tables!
The first tree stump side table has a natural wood finish and is made of wood from fallen cypress trees. If you’re not familiar with fallen wood, these side tables are only made from naturally fallen trees, so you can feel good about your eco-choices and enjoy unique beauty as no two are exactly alike. This piece is called the natural wood side table and is currently for sale in west elm stores across the country (it’s not part of our online collection).
The second tree stump side table has a white finish and is seen above and used in Kavita’s makeover. This one is made of white resin molded in the shape of a tree stump -- it’s not wood. This piece, called the resin tree stump side table, will be available at west elm starting after the holidays. Although it’s not out yet, it’s great to hear that a lot of you like it so much.
We hope that now your toughest decision will be which one to choose!
Hope that helps!

5Wow. Its ok but I too dont like it painted white. I am amazed that people can charge 150 to 200 for a stump. The cost of firewood is high this year, LOL, jk. I understand the artistic value.. still, I am a wood artist myself.. and I make these in a natural form but sanded smooth and a few coats of spar urethane -- and mine only run about 59.00 to 99.00. So I am amazed when I see a piece of equal or lesser quality going for 150 and up. Pottery Barn imports theres from Argentina and turns around and sells them for $249.00!!! Thats really just insane. At the risk of sounding like a salespitch -- my work can be viewed at www.around-the-bend.com or on eBay if you type in log stool in the searchbox, you'll find Around the Bend woodworks. Dont overpay for your pieces!
