Now that we've "fallen back" into the dark, I thought I'd share some grim celebrity trivia with you. While flipping through a photo gallery of haunted "murder" houses at This Old House, I learned that Nicolas Cage is the proud owner of the most haunted house in New Orleans' French Quarter, which he bought for nearly $3.5 million. The house was built in 1832 for Dr. Louis Lalaurie and his sadistic wife, Delphine, who legend has it, violently tortured and murdered hundreds of slaves within the house.

As for the hauntings, there were many reports of paranormal experiences between 1837 and 1932 in the house. In 1920, one resident reported: "There were no other families living here and one night, on the third floor, I saw a man walking carrying his head on his arm." In 1932, the house was being used as a furniture store, and it was reported that the owner "first suspected vandals when all of his merchandise was ruined several times, covered with a foul liquid filth. The owner waited one night with a shotgun, hoping to catch the vandals in the act. When dawn came, the furniture was once again ruined. He closed the place down shortly thereafter."

While this history alone would prevent me from looking into this real estate, I think that this next fact would deter nearly everyone from buying the property: According to This Old House, "More recently, human remains dating back to the 19th century have been found in the home's floorboards." Maybe that explains Cage's permanently sullen expression.
Actually, Cage has made a habit of purchasing historical homes throughout the country and added this one to his stable in April. He reportedly has many real estate holdings, which he purchases through his trust, Hancock Park Real Estate Company L.L.C., to avoid media attention. His other addresses include a house in New Orleans' Garden District, a historical mansion in San Francisco's Russian Hill, two houses in Las Vegas, multiple properties in LA, and at least one place in NY. Ahhh to be a Coppola...

OooOooOoo spooky...

2When my friends and I went to New Orleans on vacation (a few months before Katrina) we went on a ghost tour and saw this house and learned all about it.
What the Lalauries did to their servants was just disgusting. Not only did they torture them, they performed sadistic medical experiments on them, like cutting body parts off and reattaching them to different parts of their bodies, or even different people.
3I just could never live in a house that I knew was haunted...I'd be so scared all the time.
4OMG!! I want to go see this house!
5Oooo spooky...I love Nicolas Cage, he is such an interesting man (and yes, I think he is sexy to).
6Creepy! I couldn't live in a house like that, especially AFTER the bodies were found!
7Its such a pretty home... I'd have to pray about it.... There aint nothing like a good exorcism to rejuvenate real estate
8actually i read somemore about the place... and HELL naw I wouldnt live there...
9ooooooooooooo whiplash
10really?
yikes!
how sad and awful.
not sure what i think of nicolas buying this house?
any clue what he does with it?
does he actually stay there or is he just preserving a historical home?
no fair!
11You know, it's funny because I was just in Newport, RI visiting some friends and they said that Nicholas Cage just bought a house there as well. Maybe it'll get to be an urban legend: "Did you know Nick Cage lives in...". Ha!
12I read the story about that lady and she was a sick woman.
13That's freaky.
Must be nice to own more than half a dozen homes all over the nation....
14Nic Cage has always been a weirdo maybe that is his appeal to me...i could never live in a house with that much demonic history HELL TO THE NO!! lol
15They should get the guys from TAPS on it!
16Has anything paranormal happened to Nicholas Cage when he has lived there...that is what I want to know.
17I've actually READ about this house in one of those "Haunted America" books. It was a long time ago, but this particular case stood out because of how horrific the acts of violence and torture were. And now Nicholas Cage owns it. . .how strange.
18I think it's cool that he's bought up some historical homes. I would too if I had the money. Wouldn't bother me to own a real haunted house...tho I may not actually live in it!
19Crazy....
20I have been there many times. It's such a cool building. I heard about that story on the NO ghost tour and in a book of paranormal I bought in NO on my last trip. It surprises me that Nick Cage has it. Marilyn Manson or Trent Reznor must not be in the market for real estate. Both like to buy creepy places.. like the house of the Tate/LaBianca Murders (helter/skelter/charles manson).
I lovee ghost stories!! Thanks for this one.
21Hi Chatnoir,
Actually Trent Reznor lived for years in New Orleans! But no longer...
And, to all of you who were wondering how Cage could live in such a horrific place-- I think it's just an investment.
22Cheers,
Casa
I don't think I can live there with angry spirits like that!
23That so cool! But I would rather not live in a haunted house with angry spirits. I'd ratehr live in one with nice, happy spirits!
I also wish that I could have that many houses!
24TAPS should do a Ghost Hunters episode on it. I would definetly tune in for it.
25That is quite a waste of money there. He should have donated the money to charities instead.
26I'd like to visit this place, if only to measure how long I can last before the last ounce of bejesus gets scared out of me and I go hightailing out of the place!
27I love ghost stories, but I wouldn't want to live there unless Nic was there, and that would be a different story.
28thats cool!
29Just because a tour guide on a New Orleans ghost tour said it, it MUST be true. These are just entertaining stories. That's all. Murdered hunereds of slaves? Please, that story is highly impractical, especially due to the locaiton of the house. Like the Myrtles Plantation, which only became 'haunted' when the bed and breakfast opened. Some of the real stories about lots of these houses are actually far more interesting than the ghost stories.
30nicholas cage actually does own this house, actually the IRS does now. he does not live here beecause of the ghost after he bought it, his family had been spooked so he rented the house next door for a while. now he only lets his friends stay in the house. he has a white haired man who lives in the house all the time he will talk to you about anything when you see him. just not about the ghost, or the house!
