Hi Casa,
I saw this chair and sofa on Craigslist today. I love the lines and they would be fun for decorating my first real apartment I got after getting my first job out of ollege. Pink is not my most favorite of colors and I can't afford to have them re-upholstered. Should I tolerate the pink (it's kind of a dusty pink, no?) and maybe re-upholster down the line when I can afford it? If it would help, i live in an apartment in a renovated 1920s hotel. It also has great "bones," with molding, hardwood, and black and white tile in the kitchen. The walls are painted a warm beige/light creamy brown color.
Thanks,
Mindbolt

Hi Mindbolt,
Wow, that's beautiful! I'm a big fan of the lines of those pieces as well, and, as the seller indicates, the color is more of a taupe than a pink, which I think you could minimize further by accessorizing with hip, modern throw pillows that bring out the taupe color rather than the pink. The furniture looks a little dated in the photo, but that's because it's surrounded by some kitschy elements and fabrics. Some contemporary touches would make all the difference.
Because this is classic furniture, you know that the bones are going to be solid—this is furniture that's stood the test of time. So re-upholstering it is a good option in the future if you want to spend the money down the line. Here's a link to approximate yardages for re-upholstering furniture, which you can consult when you begin to look for fabric.
What a great Craigslist find! I say go for it! I've added a widget with suggestions for throw pillows and upholstery fabrics, so check them out below.
Cheers,
Casa

Mindbolt, be sure to check on the condition of the cushions. Many times, the cushions on older pieces has foam that has disintegrated or gotten hard, so ask the condition or check before you buy. You don't want to bring mold into your place! (I have purchased lots of older upholstered pieces and 50% of the time the cushions have to be replaced!)
You should probably splurge to have them professionally cleaned. It will perk them up! I like the idea of the black/white and the pink/taupe colors. Or, go with the pink/brown combo casa recently posted about! I like the lines of this!
1Thanks so much Casa for the suggestions! It's exactly everything i imagined, and it's so funny that i already have a few brown accents in the furniture/fabrics i do have. Thanks again, i'm so excited to start decorating around the chairs.
2Thanks sgdish! We actually saw them in person and tried them out. The cushions were still soft and comfortable. These kinds of pieces i have seen don't have overstuffed cushions anyway. And it was clean and well kept. The previous owner is a big collector of Century Modern pieces (as u can tell from the picture), so i think i may have lucked out. He is only selling them because he got a dog and is afraid of the damage he might cause.
3I love it! great find.
4Mindbolt, you have a lucky find! Go get them!
5Is that a kitty under the sofa?
6super good find; i love them
7Mindbolt, I love the lines, too! Definitely get them cleaned! My only beef with buying on Craiglist is the whole resurgence of bed bugs (I hate to scare you!). I am sure it's not a problem if the seller and his/her place appeared well kept. There's a great fabric for sale online at Lewis and Sharon textiles out of Atlanta, and if you or a friend sews, I think you should consider it for throw pillows. It'll pull in the black out of the kitchen too (I assume the kitchen is close by and that's why you mentioned the black/white in there). I bookmarked it with "mindbolt sofa" and hope that was the right way to flag it for you. Cheers and have fun with your new furniture!
8Ooooo I love them too! I would totally buy them if I were you
9are they comfy, thats the only thing that really counts in my house.
10check them out first and if you like go for it.
