Molly directed me to these Flickr photos from the Westlake District of Daly City, California. One of America's first master-planned postwar suburbs, Westlake was the "inspiration" for Malvina Reynolds' song "Little Boxes," which became a hit for folk musician Pete Seeger in 1964. Many Casa readers, however, probably recognize it as the theme music for the TV show "Weeds."
You can find out more about Westlake on America's Most Perfect Ticky-Tacky Suburb. I'm curious: Do you like these homes, or do you find the design too dated? Tell me when you take a look the gallery and read more

I love them! The big windows invite me in, and the Dr. Sussy topiary is just right. I would happily live in any one of them (and spend my nights blissfully dreaming of color schemes for my next paint job).
1I like them too!
2They are so cute!
We have some pretty darn cute house like this in Calgary too!
Love it! I'd live there in a heartbeat--very retro cool. I'd never call this tacky...I'd call modern track housing the tackiest thing of all.
3Like jmt, I love the big windows! Definitely not tacky to me!
4I love them. They have way more character than most of today's suburban homes. I would love to get my hands on one of these for decorating!
5i really like them as well. i think the mcmansions people are building today are a million times worse than what these charming houses look like. they at least have visual interest and attempt to create difference with use of colors, angles, etc.
6Some of the ones in the pictures are very cute, but unfortunately they don't all look this nice. I think the exterior paint has a lot to do with whether they look retro-chic or dated.
7eh-
8So cute.
9oh wow. i wouldn't mind living here
10Um, yea, I live in Daly City and they definitely don't all look like this. It's also foggy in Daly City all the time so this must have been a lucky sunny day! This is only like 10 minutes from San Francisco but the rent is definitely a lot cheaper, but i'd pick the city over the little box houses any day.
11i really like the orange one in the little pictures. i find them quite interesting, and i like how houses from that era divided up space, rather than the massive cookie-cutter houses of today.
12I live in Westlake and I can not wait to move. Like Mendo said, it is ONLY foggy in Daly City and it kinda ruins the day. I'm always glad to drive to work because there is sun in the city.
13Yea I live about 2 miles from Westlake district... Its foggy, MOST of the houses DO NOT look cute like this.. It's busy all the time with traffic from the nearby shopping centers... Theres some ghetto parts... I dunno... I think this pic is far from the truth
14Aw. My dad used to sing that song to me when I was little.
15Westlake pretty well sucks. Having grown up 10 minutes from it, I can safely say that the fog there, as well as the rest of the neighborhood, makes for an ugly, ugly place to live. Daly City (home of Serramonte, a.k.a. SerraManila)is a bit like the a*shole of the Bay Area.
16Yeah, Daly City? Not so cute. . .if you guys knew it you'd be slower to say you want to move there, lol. Everyone I know from there who is my age has definitely made their escape!
17I love those houses! They are so cute and I like how they are all a little bit different.
18I love those houses too. They seem to have character!
19I agree with below...
20What color next?
Totally Love Them~
