According to A Perfect Mess, the book by Eric Abrahamson and David H. Freedman, having a messy workspace can actually increase efficiency and flexibility, and company heads usually are messy! It's an interesting argument, but I'm not sure whether I'm a believer.

i use to be soooo martha about my desk
1lately it's been kinda scattered
but never messy
I've been using my lap top alot more lately so i haven't been sitting at my desk ,but normally no, i don't leave it messy .I can never find anything if it is and it drives me nuts......
2It has a few things on it, but before I leave everyday I make sure it's all tidied up.
3I like having a very clean work surface... I think it's hard to concentrate on anything when there are piles of things next to you waiting to be done and organized.
4I don't have my own desk at either of my jobs. I have to use someone else's which really sucks.
5My desk at home is not too messy.
i have so much going on and so much of my time is spent procrastinating therefore it is necessary for me to have a messy desk. The things that distract me need to be on hand.
6My drawers are very unorganized, but my desk surface is neat. Unfortunately, my desk is the front desk of our office, so I have to keep it very neat and impersonal.
7My desk is perfecto and clutter free all the time- I guess I am slightly obsessive about it...
8i am SOOO OCD about everything being in exactly the right place- it would never be a mess
9I honestly don't have time to organize my desk on a daily basis. When it gets really bad, I come in on a weekend and clear it off.
10No way. My desk is perfect all the time, even when I'm busy.
11I wouldn't call myself Martha, but I do think that a workspace should be neat in order to concetrate, or at least that's the case with me.
12I can't work at a messy desk. I make sure everything is tidied away each evening before I leave, even if that just means piling files into a basket and shoving notebooks into my drawers
13lol, I'm a martha stewart.
I always have to have my things organized, it just helps me out sooooooooooooooooo much!!
14I hate clutter, so I have to keep it tidy but I'm not obsessive about it.
15I get too confused by clutter. My work desk is very organized. My computer at home is a laptop on top of an Ikea laptop desk, so there isn't much room for anything else on my desk. I like being sort of a minimalist.
16I'm halfway. I like to keep my desk relatively neat.
17I have organized chaos on my desk if that makes any sense!
18My desk is somewhere in the middle. But it's funny: my boss wants me to tidy my desk tomorrow. I'm scared that she'll be hovering over my shoulder. Or worse, help me straighten it up even more. I feel it's a personal thing to put things in their place so I know where everything is.
19My boss says empty desk empty mind. Still, every once in a while- usually when I'm not so productive I am bothered enough to clear it off.
20I have clutter during the day, but always clear things and put them in their proper spots before I leave my desk. So I come in to a fresh, clean space!
21i have no time to clear my desk (but it's funny that i have time to post this)...it's cluttered but i believe in the organized chaos theory (at least that's what i tell myself)...no matter how cluttered my desk is, i know where everything is if anyone asks...
22Nope, but I have a feeling it might get messier as I get older.
23seems organized to me of course. i hate having things all put away all the time because i end up needing it (like stuff for school) right away. and well, i never seem to have enough storage close by.
