Have any of you Casa readers been keeping up with the HGTV series "Design Star"? I've been pretty riveted, even though the designers' drama has sometimes overpowered their designs. You just never know how a project is going to turn out and how judges Martha McCully, Cynthia Rowley, and Vern Yip are going to weigh in on the challenges.
In the season finale (airing at 9 p.m. EDT/PDT this Sunday) the contestants have been whittled down to Kim Myles and Todd Davis, who've really had to shine to beat out the other nine designers for the coveted final spots. I was really sad to see the classy, talented, and humble Will leave after Challenge 6—he has such a big heart and it really shows in the thoughtfulness of his designs.
I'm rooting for Kim, a hair stylist who describes her style as "global-urban elegance." She's just had such spirit and drive throughout the show, and I love that she doesn't have any formal design training. I'm also impressed by her understanding of color, and I think she usually marries function and style pretty successfully.
Todd has had some good designs this season, though the fact that his dream project is designing lad-mag Maxim's headquarters isn't really my idea of dreamy. And I just can't trust that my house will be properly designed by someone who dresses himself in white socks, Keen shoes, and leather pants.

Here's the before-and-after picture of Todd's last challenge, which was to turn an outdated Hawaii hotel room into something more contemporary and cool.

And here's Kim's take on the same challenge.

And here's a bigger image of Kim's project, just because I think it turned out so well.

Now that you know who I'm rooting for, will you let me know who you think should win?

Oooo I really like Kim's, that what I want.
1How did you make/where did she get those things above the headboard?!?!?! I love them!
I think Kim has really grown since the beginning and I like how she uses color and adds sophistication and functionality to a space. In the last challenge, her design says upscale tropical and to me Todd's work, while creative, looks more like something really cool for a kid's room.
I've been voting for Kim all week and can't wait to see if she wins!
2I'm rooting for Kim too! I voted for her everyday! Haha.
3GO KIM!!! On top of her talent, she blew everyone else away in terms of her "hosting" ability -- she was a natural on camera without any forced cutesy-talk. If she wasn't voted the winner, it will be a travesty.
ash, in terms of the headboard, I believe the leaves were separate when she bought them, placing them onto the brown painted wooden boards herself. She said the were hand-carved art pieces done by a local (Hawaiian) artist. I think I saw she got them at a furniture store on location in Hawaii (it looked like a giant Pier 1 Imports type store, but I'm guessing it wasn't a retail store?).
4i haven't watched this year, has the show grown since last year, or is still sort of lacking?
5Love Kim's! So pretty! I'm with you Casa!
6I mean sure for the stylist photo shoot the dressed Todd.(or at least i hope it wasn't him) the leather pants are a bit much...
I like Kim; but she's not that great of a designer, practical yes, and good on screen, but I'd rather finally see a straight male host an hgtv show, maybe realize that they need some masculinity added HGTV's roster.
but he's gonna have to change is name, or go by his middle name.
7Other wise he'll be standing in Oldhams shadow for the rest of his days...
I want to have Kim come over to mi casa to give it a facelift!
8That suede couch looks sumptuous! But I think I would rather hang out in Kim's room too!
9I'm rooting for Kim too!! I missed last week, and have been trying to catch a repeat all week, I hope it plays at 8 this Sunday!!
10I feel like Kim's room is nicer, but I totally agree with Fit - sooo want to lay on the couch.
11Go Kim!!
12Go Kim! I LOVED how her suite turned out and I think she has been the best contestant on camera since the beginning of the show.
13I like Kim's more too - it looks more inviting and comfortable. Plus, the warmer colors are so much nice for the bedroom.
14Kim. I voted for her twice.
Todd is..I just don't get how his shirt was always off most of the episodes I've seen him on..which is pretty much...EVERY episodes
Regardless...I prefer Kim's design. She has such talent and I feel safe that she's not going to turn my house into some "artwork" only she can understand (like Todd does with most of his rooms). I think she's going to be a great design star.
Todd is a good designer but he's more theatrical, he should design for Disney, or some stage production..I don't want him near my home at all! (I'm scared of his designs, to be honest
)
15kim's style is mega cute
16but todd's is cuting edge and sorta brilliant!
todd is certainly entertaining (can you imagine him and ty pennington in the same room? insanity!), but i'm rooting for kim!
the finale this year was definitely ten times better than last season's. last year the finalists decorated basically glass rooms in the middle of a park in nyc. it was ridiculous. they didn't have the ability to paint the walls, do any sort of window treatment, etc. plus it was a plain rectangular shape. booooring. i'm glad they were given actual spaces this year that people could take inspiration from. i loved kim's room, and wish i could somehow replicate her headboard!
17I love Kim and soooo hope she wins. She has been my favorite since they did the little box rooms and she used paper plates to simulate wallpaper.
18I'm rooting for Kim also. In the middle of the competition I was liking Todd (despite my entire soul being against it -- the fact that he always had his shirt off, even when he was working with power tools, was mildly disconcerting), but in the last few episodes I think Kim really stepped it up. I also think she's a way better host than Todd.
19i like both but it seems kims gonna win!
20I'm totally over this show. I no longer watch this show. sorry...
21I just really like them both. Can't decide, so either is ok with me.
22I voted for Kim. I hope she gets it. Todd's last design would be cute for a kid's room, but all the blue...yuck.
23I thought Kim totally rocked the tropical vibe without ending up cheesy.
kim's been my no. 1 choice since the audition episode!
24I wanted Kim to win. Todd was a bit too high energy to me, I would never hire him to design any room of mine. Kim rocked, the right amount of talent, vision and attitude, and she is self-taught which makes me respect her even more.
And she won!! YAY!!
25darn - i completely missed this - you think they'll re-run the whole season?
