Yesterday, I gave you a primer on making an emergency preparedness kit. Whether you live in hurricane alley, earthquake country, or anywhere in between, there are essential items you should have around in case of a disaster.
Fortunately, a number of companies and non-profits have started offering ready-made (and sometimes quite stylish) emergency kits to help you along. Some of these have everything you need to get by, while others are meant merely as "starter kits," so it's still a good idea to make sure you have everything on the Red Cross's checklist. The other day a monster of a storm came the wind, hail, and lightening were bad so I had my cousin whom I nanny for and I go down to the basement. Luckily in the rush I was able to make sure we had what we needed. There were already pillows and blankets downstairs I made him grab crackers, protein bars, dog treats and bottled water while I grabbed my laptop, first aid kit, a small tv, and the dogs water bowl. Luckily we were ok, but we were stuck down there for close to two hours and I was glad to have the water and protein bars and the tv to watch the weather on. I'm glad I grabbed it as a last minute thought because my laptop wasn't able to pick up a strong enough signal in the basement. Although having already had this stuff packed would have been a lot easier and taken less time to run around and find.
1Just got a small, basic first aid kit for my husband from CVS. He works with glass so he tends to get cut now and then.

3We always take for granted that something can happen any second that will interrupt our way of life. We need to always be prepared. Keep a kit at home, in your car, and at work.
4We don't have a kit yet, been meaning to get 1 or even just throw some things in a tote or box, just haven't had the chance yet. Do agree though that everyone should have one, so I must get around to doing it soon.
5Don't forget to plan for your pets, too. Include your dog or cat (or gerbil) in the body count when you are stocking up on bottled water. I'm still trying to figure out how I can have emergency dog food on hand and not have it go bad or be eaten by rodents. I might get a few cans of moist dog food just for emergencies. Although I could get a few heavy-duty ziploc bags and fill them with dry food and then seal them up.
6Living in CA I really should have one but they're such a pain to keep up with. You have to check expiration dates, storage, etc. I'd rather buy pre-packaged kits that get replaced all at once.
