My friend's home had their firplace decorated almost like the one mentioned in Ella1978's comment. The difference was they used different (yet color complimenting) pillar candle holders in three sizes: large, medium and small (same goes for the candle.) They created a layered look. When lit, the room looked stunning. I plan to do the same to my own home sometime.

I saw a great picture once where there was a silver platter with a tight group of different height pillar candles. They were all more than 8 inches tall, and matched the trim color of the fireplace. It was really pretty.
