The adorably innovative Message Bean ($14.95) would be a great and affordable housewarming or hostess gift. The recipient simply has to plant the bean, and a message appears on either side of the sprout. Varieties include "Thank You," "Love," "Good Luck," "Happy Birthday," "Get Well," and more.
All it takes is soil and about a half cup of water, and it grows in about a week. Has anyone tried this? If so, let me know how it turned out.

yes, my friend had one and the message wasn't very clear but it was really cool! It's actually cute for dorm rooms, I think, since she had hers in college
That's awesome. I have to try it!
I have not tried this it kind of creeps me out, like my plants trying to communicate with me.
I love the idea! It would be great to plant one's saying WELCOME or something near the front door.
For real? That's crazy! I also think that would make a wonderful hostess gift.
that seems really neat. I wonder how they do it?
Santa gave my kids one of these for Christmas and once the bean sprouts, the message is on the outside of it's shell, which quickly fell off and dried up. The thing looked like a weed and died quickly after. It was kinda a dissapointment.
I think it would be cute for the college and high school aged. I remember seeing them in a catalog before and thinking it was a interesting idea.
That's really cute! A nice, simple gift idea.
Those are cute, but I don't think I know anyone who would truly appreciate a cute plant.
What an awesome idea! I'll have to remember this for the holidays and birthdays.
I got the "love" one for my office. The message was printed on the bean, it lasted about a week before the bean fell off but then the plant continued to grow like crazy! It was more of a vine then a plant and it twisted around everything on my desk before I had enough and threw it out.
For $15 I'd rather give someone a bunch of flowers and a card.
How cool!
Cute gift idea! I was about to toss it out though after reading radarkitty's comment but seems chiaramw had better luck.
very cute
it teaches patience and nurture. love it!
It's a cute idea but honestly it creeps me out. I'm not sure why.
My coworker got one of these - only she didn't know what it was going to say. Man that thing took a life of its own - we had it crawling through almost five feet of blinds before it suddenly died.
Cute...dying to see this work!
adorable! I have been looking for some gifts to give one of my friends that help me out a lot recently and this perfect!
Wow - this is definitely a tribute to packaging and marketing. Sorry to be kind of negative but beans are what, 50 cents a pound? A bean, a sharpie and 4"x2" tin (Oh, ok, they lasered the message). But heck, we're paying for creativity and novelty and they've got that going for them!
is it weird to feel bad for the plant?
i sent a friend 'good luck' when he started med school.
my boyfriend bought me one that said "miss you" and although it was really cute, the bean eventually dried up and fell off. the plant itself started growing like crazy (jack & the bean stalk style) and i eventually had to just throw it away before it consumed my house
i think its is a great idea!!!!
