Retail_Therapy is extending the definition of "home" decorating to include her homeroom classroom, which she recently shared photos of in the Su Casa group. (Want to share your photos? Here's how to join Su Casa.)
Retail_Therapy wanted to express her personal style and create a soothing environment for her students, ages 13 to 16. So she created a mural of Keith Haring artwork, added purple Ikea curtains, and hung mirror balls from the ceiling "because learning should be fun." I wish more of my classrooms had looked like this. Wow! Certainly doesn't look like any classroom that I've ever been in. I like the personalized touches - less sterile of an environment.
1I was my class looked like this. I've definitely only seen white and beige walls.

3Wow, I love this! I love that lavender color on the wall, seems like it'd be very relaxing. Much better than the ugly beige walls you see in most schools!!
4That's nice. I made a mural on the classroom walls of my husband's homeroom (he is a schoolteacher in music for elementary kids) and I painted kids singing, different instruments, kids playing the "Ring-A-Ring-A-Rosie", musical symbols and notes and trees, flowers and birds. Hahaha...I felt like a kid while I was doing that.
5I would love it if I had a classroom with Keith Haring's work on it! He's one of my favorite artist! More teachers should take this as a hint. If you can make it happen, personalize your classroom! I think it will make a difference. Ugly beige and plain white walls and boring furniture make it unwelcoming. It's like a doctor's waiting room.
6What a fabulous idea! I
that a teacher would take the time and effort to do this for
their students. (And themselves of course!)
7Great idea!
8Retail_Therapy- you are such a fantastic teacher to take the time and so much thought and effort for these kids. Lucky group..
9That's fantastic, retail! Very creative and thoughtful!
10I love it! The feeling is warm and soothing, yet at the same time creative and energizing! I think you hit it! I also think you are a natural-born teacher and you have a passion for what you do. It says a lot about the care you have towards the students you teach as well. I agree with sofi that you've got a luck group of kids!
11What an awesome classroom! Keith Haring should be in every school! I bet kids hope to get the chance to be in there - it's great!
12gee, thanks!! *blush*
I know my students do enjoy themselves more when they come for my lessons, cos they tell me how it's such a refreshing change from the other rooms which they go for lessons.
13and I got the idea for the mural when I read FABsugar a while back on wall mural stickers which also featured some of Keith Harring's artwork. So I improvised.
14wow!
15You must be an awesome teacher!
16Wow, that's so nifty!
17we used to design our classrooms too! for us, we used to have a specific classroom to go to, so we get to decorate our 'space'. It was so fun!
18That's awesome and I'd love to do that to my classroom, however board policy prevents teachers from changing the "fabric" of the building, which involves painting or putting stuff up etc..... All because one teacher painted her ceiling tiles and it caused asbestos to start to fall into the classroom. Very dangerous so... we can't make changes to our rooms, at all.
19I love it! I bet this is their favorite class to come to!!
20wow these kids are so lucky
21I think this is an awesome job and I wish there were more teachers like you. I wish I had a classroom environment like this. A rooms design does influence a persons mood and the mood here would make anyone want to learn.
22That's amazing!! Sure beats dirty windows, broken chairs, and.. everything else sucky about typical classrooms.
23What an AWESOME classroom, Miss Retail!! I LOVE IT!!
24Wow, that's the nicest classroom I've EVER seen!
25That's so cute! My sister is a teacher and I'm going to show her this.
26wow....i love it. what a great idea!!
27Fabulous!
What a great enviornment in which to stimulate the creativity and imagination of kids. Learning should be exciting, classrooms should be interesting.
I'll bet you're a teacher who inspires students, they'll always remember you and your beautiful classroom.
28Wow: I love this classroom so much, oh so much...
Thank you for
sharing and for inspiring.
