Swanky modern design can be intimidating, but the online store Hive provides shoppers with an excellent education. The outgrowth of a Portland, Ore., boutique, this online shop is incredibly comprehensive in the famed designers and iconic designs it carries. The products range from mid-century modern classics to edgy designs from contemporary talents.

You can buy everything from an Eames Plastic Armchair Rocker to a Philippe Starck Juicy Salif fruit squeezer, and each items comes with an extensive write-up about its history and significance. Given, many of the more artful pieces are quite expensive, but there are plenty of great home accessories that will let you indulge your design fetish on a budget. Check out some of my picks from the store by clicking on the photos below.

Yay for my widgets working again! I really like several of those pieces. Can't see them in my house necessarily, but I like them!
1Those couches are brilliant!
2I LOVE the seating in the top picture!
3I love the couches! They would be perfect for my playroom
4I love the red and green couches and chairs and also the shelving units. Others---not my type--too retro
5Sign me up for one of everything!
6i love modern furniture... i'm not an overly traditional gal... I dont want to feel like someone has died on my sofa...
7I love the chairs in the second picture and especially the 'le corbusier lc7 chair' in the selections below it!
8Funny how most modern furniture looks like 70's stuff.
9really gorgeous stuff! i especially like the sofa
10These things really aren't my style but they are very cute.
11Love all of them and want them in my house right now. Except the Gehry sofa, I always thought that was hideous.
Schianne, "Modern" as a design term refers to a specific period/ era of design, not the present. It doesn't actually refer to contemporary design at all. Modern design looks older because it is older, and could even be accurately used to describe certain things from the 30s and before.
12I really like the orange-slice sofa and leaf chairs, I also love the mobile, but I can't imagine a house with a space suitable for it.
