Used as both a noun and an adjective, antique applies to any piece of furniture, art, clothing, or decorative item that is at least 100 years old. Though many antique malls sell items less than a century old, those pieces are technically not antiques and would be more accurately described as retro.

hmm. i thought antique was over 50 years. thanks for the clarification!
1You'll also hear the term "vintage" used for pieces under 100 years. I happen to love antiques and vintage items. I like to mix them with my new things for a little pop! Also, some of the older wooden pieces are made better than the furniture of today, unless you pay an arm and a leg for it!
