Whether you have kids or you just like the idea of writing on the wall, chalkboard paint like this one from Rust-Oleum is a fun and funky way to liven up a wall, a cabinet, or any patch of blank space where you need to jot down notes.
Available in green or black — I love the green for its retro schoolroom feel — the paint turns any wall into a writable and erasable surface. Because it works on wood, metal, glass, and plastics, it's incredibly versatile. Paint a patch of it on your office wall, or resurface the front of your fridge.

Of course, it's great for kids' rooms, but rather than cover an entire wall, why not use this idea from Real Simple and create cool silhouette, such as a house- or tree-shaped chalkboard?

I love this stuff! I can't wait to use it in my own house for any child that stops by.
As a teacher, I have used this I my classroom on an old easel and it was a hit all year long! It really is great! I have always wanted to paint the inside of door panels of my pantry, too!
What a creative teacher WhereSheShops!
Wow, that is a very creative and unique idea
I think I saw this on a tv show... It's such a cool idea, I wish this was available when I was a little kid!
I used to see this on Trading Spaces once in awhile. I just wonder how hard it is to paint over later! But I really love the idea - ingenious!
The silhouette is a great idea, because it seems kinda dark to paint a whole wall with, esp. in a kid's room
That is an excellent point ALSW! Casa, do you know anything about the ease and effectiveness of painting over the chalkboard paint?
I love chalkboard paint! I thought of just putting up a large square or rectangle like a chalkboard in school, but a house, now that would be awesome.
This stuff is awesome! Someday I want to do my kid's room with it! I love the silhouette idea!
I've used this and the magnetic paint. They work great!
We sprayed this into cookie sheets to make portable chalkboards for road trips, the raised edges keep the chalk (dustless!) from rolling away from little hands. The sheet does double duty as a tray for them to eat on while on the road.
When I was in highschool I did an art piece that involved 6 huge canvases put together to make a storyboard. One of the blocks was about how friends and I would colour all over the road with sidewalk chalk when we were younger. I used the spraypaint version of this to coat the board so I could change what the road said every day that it was up.
i'd heard of this stuff before--but i love that sample picture of it painted like a tree. that idea is soooo cute!
Chalkboard paint is the coolest, you can paint the top of a kids table, so they have their own doodle station, or paint small squares on dressers to label what goes into them in a creative way.
You can do SOOOO much with it, and the idea of making a part of your fridge a chalkboard is genius!
is there dry erase board paint too? or just chalk and magnetic?
this is such a great thing
that's so cool!
love it!
One of my friends painted the back of her bedroom door with this stuff and it turned out really cool.
The little girls I used to take care of had a wall painted with this stuff. We used colored chalk to practice their letters and numbers and to draw pictures. They loved it!
we have this on the walls of our bathrooms at my college. keeps the art school kids happy and keeps permanent graffiti to a minimum. or at least makes them get more creative about it!
I like the fridge idea.
The tree and fridge ideas are so cute! I've always been worried about the paint-over-a-bility too. We're planning on selling in the next 1 1/2 years or so...I'd hate to turn off a buyer.
this is a cool idea.
I love this stuff!
After moving many years ago, it was decided to hide the breaker panel behind something (we chose to put this on a small framed door, and placed it over the panel). Worked wonders!
We updated our kitchen last fall and used this but also took it one step further and magnetized it too. Our 20 month old daughter loves it and friends leave messages on it when they come visit, it's great!
Oh I love it.
this would have been very useful for my parents while I was a kid! My father - who's an architect - and my mom - a communications, publicity and graphic design major - used to have a wall in the house that we used to call "the paint wall" and we could draw, paint, etc in it... now that I'm studying architecture I have one in my apartment, but I think I'll add some stripes with this!!
Oh my gosh this stuff is soooooo cool! I wanna go buy some right now!
I want this for my son's room now! Great idea!
I painted the top of my daughters art table with chalkboard paint. She loves to use chalk.
Kids are so lucky these days. They have the most innovative items for them now a days.
This looks so neat!
Awesome!! I am so getting this when I have kids!
I liked the idea that someone brought up...using cookie sheets and the chalkboard paint to make portable chalkboards.
my mom did this at her daycare. it was so much fun going over there. i would think t do this in my own home but i am too paranoid about all the chalk dust.
When I painted a chalkboard on my daughter's room wall, she just went mad about it!! She and her little sis enjoy so much playing school teachers
So, it is ok but maybe not in the bedroom for children affected with asthma (because of chalkdust).
just hope the kid can stay in the lines of that silhouette.
I actually painted the centers of my kitchen cabinets with this paint then drew a child verson of what was actually in that cabinet. The white and great of the cabinets is a great contrast to the "Red Hot" Collor that I painted my kitchen walls. I got the idea from the Pottery Barn Catalogue. My husband likes to leave me love notes on the cabinets when he is really feeling sweet.
this is soooo coool..and cute!!!
i wanna do this!
wen i get my own place.
I just have to say that even though I can't see her face, the little girl in the pic is adorable!
ADD?
what a great idea!
amazing! wow i want to go out and buy this now!
I really like this idea for a kid's room. I never thought about putting it in a shape like that. I like it a lot.
My husband and I just did this to our daughters room over the weekend. He did almost the whole wall...but made it look as if it was in a "wavy" frame. We bought her the big Crayola colored chalk for it. It works great.....the family can't stay out of her room....everyone wants to draw on her wall.
You know what would also be cute is to trace the shape of your child's body on the wall and make a silhouette that your kid can customize (clothes, faces, etc).
I need to remember this when I have my own place.
