The prospect of renovating a kitchen or bathroom is usually an expensive one. And, unfortunately, there are too many kitchens that look the one in this 1939 bungalow, bruised with dreary cabinets, cringe-inducing laminate countertops, and no sense of personal style. Luckily, one designer has proven that a few budget-friendly details and a DIY attitude are all you need to give your kitchen the fresh update it craves. Rather than making expensive replacements and tearing down walls, she concentrated on reworking the existing surfaces.
To see how she made the changes, read more.
Glass cabinet doors stained in a cool sea-glass blue instantly made the space airier, and she tied the color in with matching wallpaper. A drainboard sink found at a salvage shop for $25 drastically improved the space functionally. Architectural add-ons to the cabinetry and pretty new knobs added style. And she added small-scale, bright white subway tiles to the backsplash, which added continuity to the wall and instantly brightened it up.

oh my goodness what a transformation!
1it's senstional .... wow.
it makes me feel so uncreative!!!
Such a wonderful job, it makes a huge difference.
2Wow!! Looks so much more open. Great job!
3Bravo, I love the colors. I was thinking of painting my cabinets black but it never occured to me to do black on the bottom white on top, what a great idea!
4I LOVE the white and black cabinet combo with the blue glass. Fun and classic.
5I know this is a matter of personal taste, but I must confess I prefer the before more.
6Wow! The black cabinets are a great idea, especially with the jeweled pulls.
7the blue countertop is so daring - I love it! Not so much into the black cabinets myself, though. I might have gone all white on those. Having done something similar recently, I have trouble buying that it was terribly cheap. Good deal on the $25 salvage sink though.
8I love it!!
9Love it! Beautiful and amazing!
10i LOVE it
wouldn't change anything except maybe the countertops to
a different material... not into laminate
11I actually like the color combination (if I had to reno a kitchen--we're in tiring house hunt right now--I'd love to actually paint the cabinet black
althou I know hubby is going to freak out), but blue countertop isn't my thing. Very daring
though.
It is a little personal and not neutral enough, but yeah, they can always depersonalize when they have to sell or if they want to sell one day.
12I hadn't thought about how the top and bottom cabinets are different. It was a smart move on her part, because now the dishwasher blends in with the cabinetry.
13What a charming, beautiful kitchen! I love the aqua color palette and the daring style and color clashes. Bravo!
14That's a beautiful kitchen. (Is it bad that the "before" is tons nicer than mine?)
15Holy awesomeness... I love it!
16Yeah, I like the 'before' picture well enouf--I wouldnt have gone so far to change it==maybe just the white backsplash
17Looks great! I love the after.
