A more casual interpretation was seen at the Milan International Furniture Fair. To get the look, choose lampshades that you love, and then suspend them from a grid, from which they can be hung. You can try eco-oriented light sources, such as chains of LEDs, or simply use cord sets if you're unwilling to hardwire this project.
