I turned my backyard into a food garden and if I had a proper front yard would do it there too. Veggies are not only edible but very beautiful. Roses have nothing on passionflower (fruit) and ruby chard!

I like to mix my edibles with my ornamentals. A lot of ornamental plants make great companion plants for veggies (IE. marigolds keep the damaging bugs away from tomatoes, and garlic keeps them away from roses). Plus I love how many of my veggie plants look. There's nothing like snap peas climbing up the arbor.

It's the most ethical option for those that have lawns. It would be far more productive than having a strictly ornamental lawn as it provides food for the family, cutting thousands of miles out of the food production cycle of the average person. Ornamental lawns, grass lawns do nothing more than provide aesthetic appeal and waste large amounts of water--a resource becoming increasingly scarce, even in the developed world--with minimal gains. The act of tending to a lawn garden would also give ample opportunity to interact with neighbors, strengthening the bonds of the local community. It also comes with the same perks tending to a backyard garden gives--it's a fine way to get exercise, increasing overall health; it gives you a sense of the type of work that goes into an agricultural system that has been a staple of the human race for many thousands of years--an agricultural ecology that too many people are ignorant of; and a sense of pride in the soil and air and water, in the nature that nourishes the produce that nourishes us.

We already have the front xeriscaped and the organic garden in the back, we're good.

My front yard is all garden already! It's a lot easier to take care of (no mowing - and no weeding with mulch) and so pretty. I don't have any veggies, but would definitely consider putting them in, if it didn't ruin the aesthetics of the house.

I've just finished killing half the front lawn and am getting ready to plant. My wife is in charge of esthetics, I'm more interested in getting some crops. It looks like we'll end up with a combination of edibles, ornamentals, and edible-ornamentals.

Although we are starting a bit late for prime veggie season, here in So-Cal the growing season is plenty long.

No I like my lawn my two year old is active and likes to run around. Although I do have a small veggy garden in my back yard I don't think I would convert my front in to one. I like the open space.
