I've been pushing you to try CFLs for a long time, but I know that some of you are hesitant to do so given their look, as well as some conceptions about their light quality. While the light quality has definitely improved across the board, the funky spiral shape still turns some of you off. If that's the case, you'll be happy to hear that several of the bulbs in the GE Energy Smart line are now masquerading as incandescents. Their familiar, round shape should satisfy the anti-spiral crowd, and the 10,000-hour life of the bulb and its Energy Star compliance will help assure you that you're still living eco, even if the bulb doesn't look like your standard CFL.

I have one of these, and they take FOREVER to power up. It's like having your own personal sunrise when you turn it on...except not as pretty or relaxing.
1Wubby, you have this particular bulb? I've tried it and not had the same experience; in fact none of my CFLs take forever to power up. What type are you using?
2But do they still give off a flourescent-like glow?
3Hm . . . I think I wrote about this before, but I'm going to add the link again. In a Popular Mechanics study, all of the CFLs they used outperformed a traditional incandescent. From the study:
The results surprised us. Even though the incandescent bulb measured slightly brighter than the equivalent CFLs, our subjects didn’t see any dramatic difference in brightness. And here was the real shocker: When it came to the overall quality of the light, all the CFLs scored higher than our incandescent control bulb. In other words, the new fluorescent bulbs aren’t just better for both your wallet and the environment, they produce better light.
4Wow! I have tried one before but the light looked to awful I couldn't live with it. That was a few years ago, though, I think. Maybe I will give it another shot.
5CFLs are great- the new ones have MUCH nicer light than the old and are just are pleasant as incandescents, but even the instant on sort will take a bit to power up fully if it's remotely chilly inside.
6LED are the new CFL. They're brighter, whiter, longer-lasting, & more energy efficient. Seriously -- I don't know why everyone isn't replacing their old bulbs with them. Just NOW getting around to getting the old CFLs? Wow. I prefer the light in my house to be white...but some people need more flattering shades. They have yellow to mimic old bulbs, too.
7I use these!
8our old goverment (if you have read about honduras you should know) gave away these types of bulbs to almost all of the honduran population.. nice!! i love it!
