Grey Gardens, the once squalor-filled Hamptons mansion that was the home of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, aunt and first cousin of Jackie O., and the subject of HBO's recent flick of the same name, can be yours for $30,000 this Summer. Current owners journalist Sally Quinn and husband Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee are renting out their East Hampton mansion from August 28 to Labor Day. Thirty thousand for 11 days in a former garbage-strewn home? Well, the turn-of-the-century house has since undergone an intensive renovation, and Long Island is nice in the Summer. See postrestoration photos of the home from a 1984 issue of Architectural Digest when you read more.

It's a beautiful house. However, I've heard the owners say that it still smells like cats when it rains even though they had to basically bomb the entire thing. No thank you.
1The renovation is gorgeous, but it would creep me out staying there knowing how it was. That scene in the movie when the health inspectors go in there gives me the creeps every time!
2Glad its been restored but $30,000 for 11 days??? I don't think so, I don't care what history it carries. Interesting that Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn now own it though.
3if i had the money? and it doesn't smell like animal waste? then yes! i would rent it.
430k? Wow.
5I would be very happy to care for Grey Gardens while Ms. Howard is out and about. I think the terms should, however, be reversed. I should be paid for the task at hand(or,at the very least, watch over this beloved house for free)
6Just this past week I returned from the Hamptons. I was at Grey Gardens several times. It is somewhat of a disaster in the front yard. I wanted to walk around the property but did not have permission. For those people who are curious, the house looks the same as when the Beales (in the HBO movie)arrived the first summer. However, the grounds are a disaster in the front and I am not certain Ms. Quinn and Mr. Bradlee aren't attempting to camouflage its' existence, thus the disaster.
For me, and obviously for others, that house is like a magnet. It draws you in. When you look up at the windows you honestly expect to see one of the Edie's looking out. (I did hear it was haunted?)
Well, there is my offer,Mr.Bradlee. I am available to watch over your invaluable Grey Gardens. You have a devoted care taker and I get to stay in a home that is near and dear to me. It's a wash. Sincerely,DMW
