I've had more bicycles stolen in my lifetime than I can count. Living in a city, it's just a reality you must come to terms with. In college, I always bought the cheapest bike I could find, $45 at most. But, bikes are precious to me, regardless of how inexpensive they are.
So, sometimes the smartest thing to do is just store it in indoors, as cumbersome as that may be. Luckily, there's more and more stylish bike storage these days, to make a bike indoors less of an eyesore. Is yours indoors?

I don't have one
1I don't have one but that's because on the first night we moved to the condo, it was stolen from the bike rack out front.
2We just had so much stuff (boxes) in the living room that we didn't have any more for the bike.
My hubby's bike gets a place inside. It's a new mountain bike. Our two hand-me-down rec bikes are outside locked up on a bike rack but it's in our courtyard so we haven't had any problems with them.
3The last bike I stored outside --- stolen.
4Now my bike - my road bike with its clipless pedals and aero bars and all that jazz - lives in the basement.
I store my old mountain bike in my apt. Even though I have a balcony, city code doesn't allow anything on it! Just as well, it's so smoggy here in LA, I'm constantly sweeping the "balcony"--waste of space I say!
5We don't have any bikes for the very fact that we have no where to store them. We'd love to have them but 6 bikes to store is difficult.
6Stored in our garage, hanging on a bike rack.
7"In the garage" is hardly synonymous with "outside." My garage is probably the most secure part of my house!
8Always kept indoors... but then I have 5 bikes (road, urban hardtail, downhill, cross-country, winter beater). Maybe it's time to simplify.
9Yes. Although my house is usually alarmed and all my gates are padlocked, I store my bike in my basement on a bike rack. It's a pain because I use my bike often but since I've had unsavory neighbors with sticky fingers move in behind me, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Especially since my bike was pretty expensive.
