I love the seashells that are carefully and artfully arranged on the fireplace mantel at the Park Lane Guesthouse in Austin, TX. The white of the shell is so compelling against the gray of the stone.

At my house, I also tend to add natural objects to the mantel, such as fresh flowers, agates, or shells. While I appreciate the austerity of a restrained, bare mantel, I'm more intrigued by mantels that showcase a homeowner's interest or hobby. How do you decorate your fireplace mantel? If you don't have one, how would you want to decorate it?

Our mantle has a ceramic finial, a painted box, an antique abacus, a hand made vase that was a wedding present with bare twigs in it. Above all of this is a Bev Doolittle print.
1I do not decorate my natural stone fireplace. In my opinion, my fireplace is naturally striking by itself. It has beautiful, natural stones of warm and cool greys, and cream. It has cantilevered seating. My fireplace is a strong architectural statement. It's makes an impressive statement in our living room.
2If I had one I would leave stone very simple w/anything on it and if wood and so forth I might just do a few key pieces, no clutter.
