As much as I love the designs of outdoor rugs these days, I feel like they're more trouble than they're worth. I know they can all be hosed off and left to dry in the sun, but that's more effort than I'd like to put in. People have been entertaining and hanging out on their hardwood decks for decades, and I've never heard any complaints — OK, I did get a splinter once.
I've seen outdoor spaces accessorized just like living rooms with accent pillows and throws, and while I appreciate the effort, it's just too much. Beyond some comfortable lounge chairs and an outdoor dining table, I don't need much to keep me happy. Sure, I wouldn't mind having an outdoor kitchen, but if I ever do, there won't be a cutesy paper towel holder in sight.
How about you? What's your limit when it comes to outdoor décor? Do you keep it simple and functional? Or do you like to decorate it more like your interiors?

I feel similarly to you. I live in a zone 3 northern clime. The weather is very unpredictable and can be wild. Like you, I dig these outdoor rooms adorned and festooned with pillows and cushions and rugs and lights and other accoutrement. But for me, I know it's not practical. I could handle bringing in all the cushions at night to protect them from the weather but who would rescue these items during the day while I'm at work and a thunderstorm is looming? In order to have this kind of look, it means I'm staging based on the weather report and that's just too much damn work all the time. Yes, I'll do it for a party to please my friends but that's it. My patio has a a teak table and two teak chairs, a canvas umbrella and stand. The teak has a gray/silver patina which I adore against a green lawn. I added cushions last year and they got moldy. I think the outdoor living rooms are for the Cali people.
1I just have cushions on the seats of the chairs that I can run inside if it's going to rain or are in danger of being blown away. I do have a lot of flower pots on the deck though, so that makes it look nice.
I am fortunate enough to have a separate sun porch with white wicker furniture and nice cushions, so that's a real room that I can put candles and more plants and such in. The cats like it as much as I do.
2I decorate my deck but this is only year two that we have had it so it is exciting and an new place to tackle , I decorate with lanterns and cute furniture , NO on the rugs they leave the deck soggy , I used cushions last year and had to throw them all out so I will not be buying those anymore they are just a waste to me , candles and plants and colorful furniture is all I need .
3Weather permitting. And I looooooooooooooooooooooove that look above. Where can I get that pillow???!!
4I'm good with adequate seating and table space. I decorate the porch with hanging baskets and potted plants, but nothing else as far as home decor items.
