Growing up, my siblings and I set the table each night while my mother cooked. Now, sadly, the habit is just to grab your own silverware and napkin before you down your grub. Is the table still set at your house? By whom?

we do set it, though not fancy on weeknights...just the essentials...normally whoever is standing around while the chef is cooking...
It just depends. Sometimes we do a buffet style in the kitchen and then just bring our plates to the dining room table. Or the dining room table will be set, I usually set it, but sometimes the children do it. It just depends on the day, how busy we are, homework etc.
We have a cabinet right by the table so it's very handy, and the kids took turns growing up, but now it's just the younger one who does it. Nothing fancy: woven straw placemats (from Pier One, about 15 years old!), cloth napkins always (bandanas, actually), utensils, salt and pepper.
We used to set it but these days the only things that get put onto the table are napkins and silverware, then we bring our plates of food and drinks into the dining room.
I set the table however when I have children, I will teach them to. I feel it is important to have dinner together and setting the table is an extra few minutes of both togetherness and teaching organization.
I rarely set my table.
I live alone, so I only set the table when I have guests. When it's just me, I usually eat at my desk or sitting on the couch.
In my house, we rarely even eat at the table, so there's never a reason to set it. I live with my boyfriend and roommate, and nothing's really formal here.. most meals are in front of a tv or computer - which honestly, I find kinda sad sometimes.
the cook does it
Sometimes it's me, sometimes it's my husband. We do set the table every night.
It's up to whomever cooks.
We usually eat buffet style with the food part but the table is set with placemats and napkins and silverware. My husband always asks the boys to set the table , but if we are entertaining I like to do it. We are proud to say that we eat together 95% of the week. We also do highs and lows even when we have guests they realy enjoy that.
I put that whoever doesn't cook sets it, but really it's whoever is around at the time. If I'm home from work early enough, I help set it.
