Todd Oldham recently blogged about a new photography book called Rubbish by Jake Chessum, chronicling stunning images of trash all over the world. It got me to thinking about some fabulous street finds I've come across, and I wondered if any of you had been so lucky. I once passed a fantastic gray leather club chair while on the bus, because I was late to work, and I've been kicking myself ever since that I didn't stop to take it home.

I got the most amazing old end table by the dumpster in our neighborhood. It just needed a little cleaning and one of the drawers needed to be fixed. It's currently holding my tv.
1Nope..
2Yes! I love dumpster diving! It's a great urban pastime. It really upsets my husband that I come home with so much "junk" but I don't really care. I just keep telling him I'm doing my part to save the planet by keeping things from landfills. He also only likes new new new new so whatever. I'm sticking with it.
3My college roommate and I found a couch in college after everyone else had moved out. We cleaned it up and as far as I know, our other roommate still has it in her living room!
4I used to be an enthusiastic dumpster diver, and much of my furniture was from the refuse of others, especially at the end of the college year in spring. However, this has stopped. Why?
Bedbugs. If it's been outside, it's probably got them sleeping in it.
5My dining room table came out of the trash. It's a hardwood Duncan Phyfe repro, and a great old find.
6not usually, but i did find a beautiful dark wood framed mirror, perfect for over my dresser. why anyone would throw it away, i have no idea.
7no its in the trash for a reason. when i went to college everyone thought it was so cool to go dumpster diving. well guess what? some brought back couches and there was a outbreak of bedbugs! gross. and another brought in a tv to see if it would work......guess what it was broken and then she had to pay money to take it to electrical waste plant.
8Bedbugs and such are the reason that I only bring home non porous/semi porous things.
9before i was married my down stairs neighbor moved out and left a bunch of stuff outside his apartment with a note that said "free". does that count? i got his ethan allen buffet and matching hutch. it had the imprint of an iron on it
but otherwise was in great condition. (who
irons on ethan allen??)
10Yes! I have a chair in my dressing room that I found on the side of the road and got re-upholstered. I also found my coffee table abandoned on a country road and fixed it up. They both look great!
11yes! I found my current favourite leather boots on the side of the road.
12Wow, this reminds me of two things: one was one of my best friends (who's extremely artistic) who nonchalantly picked up a random lampshade on top of a pile of grit on the side of the road and promptly made it into something beautiful for her flat and the second was when I was driving by this dumpster in northwest London this weekend when I saw an amazing painting (FRAMED) someone had thrown out and a woman studying it ... I should have jumped out of that car and grabbed it but by the time we parked, she was walking away with it under her arm. I was so bummed!
13I've never done it, my dad is the king of this and I've benefited. He found an awesome entertainment center and a pair of gorgeous lamps for my college apartment. He also scored a nearly-new love seat from our neighbors before they moved.
14I won't ever pick up street furniture. The last thing I want is the possibility of an insect infestation!
15Nothing comes to mind...
16I haven't, but I wouldn't be above getting something non-porous, like others have mentioned. (Or getting something re-upholstered, like Mich mentioned.)
17One of my favorite pasttimes..my scores have included a pair of velvet slipper chairs, a fully woven wicker side table in perfect condition, a fabulous ornate full length mirror, and smaller things such as lamps. Being in NYC helps since people put out stuff all the time....
18Yes! This amazingly awesome chair... its round with a lil back and has all this color to the fabric. It's an amazingly comfortable chair. It swivels too!
19Bedbugs can hide in non-porous surfaces! Bedbugs have made a dramatic reappearance in the last few years and are very hard to get rid of.
20Read the wikipedia article on bedbugs and see if you're still interested in trash treasures! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedbug
No, but I've had my trash can stolen once! grrrrr
21I have found TONS of stuff over the years. One time I saw a cute kids chair when a man was cleaning out his garage I stopped and asked if it was a yard sale. He said no but What did I like. I got a really cute mini chair for basically nothing.
