Toile is a style of decorating pattern, short for "Toile de Jouy," with repeated imagery of a pastoral theme, commonly used on curtains, upholstery, and wallpaper. The style originated in 18th-century France, but it became very popular in the late '90s.
I had a toile obsession about 10 years ago; I desperately wanted to redecorate everything in a pastel yellow and blue Waverly fabric. Though I'm over my obsession, I know it's still quite popular, and I do think it can be charming for country homes. How do you feel about it?

When it's a quality toile, and installed well, it's fabulous.
I hate this toile, but I love, love, love it in general. You just have to use it judiciously. It works better on sheets or pillows or lampshades than on wallpaper.
Not for me.
I do love toile, but they picture above is overkill. I think that something as indulgent as this design requires everything else to be restrained. The prints on the walls, the added color on the table and the embellished sheets create a space that is too busy for my taste.
I don't like it at all. Looks to dowdy and feminine for my taste. I will agree that it can look pretty sweet and pretty in a country home though.
I love toile.
I love toile although not the pattern featured. Also, I like it in moderation and not over the top fem, fussy surroundings because it then becomes too FUSSY and BUSY. It can be used quite interestingly in a mix of various patterns.
I don't like the one in that picture at all, but I see how it could look pretty and cozy if you do it right.
Hate it.
I think it's fussy in that pic but my bathroom in my parents' house, which is big and old-fashioned, is done in black and white toile wallpaper with black and white tiles and it looks great. depends on the room.
♥ toile!
I have had red and ivory toile in my living room and since it connects to my kitchen changed it up with the same print but in yellow and red. I have added some chairs that I bought at auction for under $10 and had them reupholstered in a bright red and yellow and green floral print with a black background to modernize the french country look. My kitchen is painted a barn red shade and my living room is soft green. I love the way it all blends together.
I love toile - but I don't love that wallpaper!
I like toile sometimes.
I love black and white toile with red accessories.
I love love the monogrammed shams! Where did you get those? Can you do a story on monogram items for the home? Would love to see what you come up with. Thanks...
