Hawley McLean Haleblian, whose home earned an Honorable Mention in the Met Home of the Year Awards, has re-envisioned last year's zebra trend, employing a technique that makes it much more permanent.
Instead of cautiously experimenting with a zebra print pillow, Hawley went all out. She tore out an 18-square-foot section of tile, and then drew in the outline of a zebra hide. She filled in the outline with smashed black and white tiles and fixed it permanently in the floor.
I love this unexpected touch, and think it could arguably stand the test of time. Can you think of any other home trends that you'd be willing to add to your home in a more permanent manner? Whether with a mosaic tiling effect or an expensive piece of heirloom-quality furniture, what trend would you turn into a classic at your abode?

T-Bags
Bottega Veneta
Comme des Garcons
Maybe some sort of tile work in your bathroom or stone wall. That zebra print for me isn't something I would want in a yr or two...sorry.
1It's nice. I like it though not for my home.
2I think I would worry that at some point it would really date the house. Who am I to talk though. I took my collectable hobby and made it a permanent fixture in my home. Our finished concrete floors have the spiral hill and moon from Nightmare Before Christmas cut and colored into my dining room. We wouldn't have done this if we ever planned on selling the house though.
3Macgirl, I'm so intrigued by your floors! Have you posted pictures?
4I posted one, it was taken during construction so it's still very dusty. The black box in the moon is power for our Shabu pots (oh and lan parties). I wish the power could have been in the black part of the floor so it wasn't so obvious but its placement had to be decided prior to our slab being poured. And since the design flows through the entire downstairs it couldn't be fudged without things getting funny. Here's a pic of just the dining room. http://macgirl.onsugar.com/1868978 I should take pictures of the whole floor as it even flows out the front down and down to the sidewalk.
5I love this!
6I'd do a built-in kitchen computer in my own home. I love hackery.
7No thanks!
8thats awesome!
