Sometimes simple, elegant solutions can make all of the difference, such as these LED lights, which illuminate a low set of stairs at the Green Mountain Ranch. Design features such as minimal staircases, wide hallways that may accommodate wheelchairs, and showers with built-in seats are just a few of the features that make homes elderly-friendly. While my house is elderly-friendly in many ways, the long, uneven brick staircase that leads to the backyard is definitely not one of its more accessible features.

So tell me, could you grow old in your home? Is there anything preventing you from reaching the ripe old age of 80 or 90 within its walls? Tell me what makes your home elderly-friendly — or not — in the comments.

I wouldn't want to grow old in my home, but if I did, the stairs would be my downfall. Pardon the pun.
1I want nothing more than to grow old in my home as we built it from the ground up. Unfortunately we built it with our 30 something bodies in mind. No downstairs bedrooms and a fairly steep staircase. If we could modify the staircase to be a smallish elevator there... geeze this was a downer thought for the day.
2Yes, we can. This is one of reasons I liked our property.
3Yes. Our home is all on one level which is a big reason we moved in last year - the stairs at our old place were a little scary with a toddler who was just learning how to walk. But I guess the floor plan would also be ideal for hubby & I when we get old.
Really I love
this house and would be happy living here that long.
4Nope... we're under contract for our first home -- a duplex down in a rehabbed vintage building. Stairs, narrow stairways, and bathtubs make it good for us since we're young; I couldn't imagine an elderly couple living there.
5I live in a dorm. So no is my answer :

6I will keep this in mind when I buy my house. Not only for old age, also in case I break a leg or something like that and it turns out I don't have a bedroom downstairs. That's a huge problem I want to avoid.
7Not in my apt...no way.
8No way. I really doubt that we’ll manage to go up and down our stairs when we’re older.
