5 Ways to Decorate a Non-Working Fireplace
There are a lot of fireplaces out there that have been closed up and cautious landlords who don't permit using working ones. Even for those of us who can use our fireplaces, they sit untouched at least six months of the year. Well, after you've taken my lesson on
cleaning your fireplace, there are a few things you can do to spruce up your hearth and keep it looking from barren.
Real Simple recommends sticking a plant inside your non-working fireplace to "brighten up that black hole." I have a few more ideas, so check out this slideshow to see them!

Such great ideas!!
1I saw a great picture once where there was a silver platter with a tight group of different height pillar candles. They were all more than 8 inches tall, and matched the trim color of the fireplace. It was really pretty.
2My friend's home had their firplace decorated almost like the one mentioned in Ella1978's comment. The difference was they used different (yet color complimenting) pillar candle holders in three sizes: large, medium and small (same goes for the candle.) They created a layered look. When lit, the room looked stunning. I plan to do the same to my own home sometime.
