The term "house poor" suggests that although a person owns a house, he is or she is relatively broke thanks to mortgage payments, property taxes, and associated home ownership costs. If you're house poor, your assets are ideally increasing because you own property, but your monthly liquid assets are tight. Translation: you've got digs you can't afford to furnish. In the new StrikeTV web series House Poor, Mindy Kaling (The Office's Kelly Kapoor) is a prime case of this. In the series, she resorts to outlandish efforts in order to furnish her real-life new home. To see the first episode, where she fakes her own pregnancy and registers for furniture at Crate & Barrel and Z Gallerie for her "baby" shower (warning: some NSFW language), read more.

I am! Our house has decreased in value by almost half. Our mortgage has not changed and with the economy in the state it is now, I have found myself to be in this dilemma. Thank God the gas prices are falling and that I am still employed. We were able to buy most of our window coverings and things of that nature when we first moved in. We painted two rooms and furnished another, but the rest of the plans to beautify are on hold.
1I definitely am too! My mortgage is approximately 3/5ths of my total income, and when that happens, everything is a challenge, not just acquiring furniture. Luckily, my equity has already increased about $60K since purchasing it a year and a half ago, so that sort of justifies it in the long run
2I'm totally house poor, but I do have furniture. I'm hoping it will pay off in the long run though.
3Well, I think I may know of someone like that. I suspect she's house poor, but I don't know for sure (she didn't openly admit it to me). Oh well.
4I'm house poor, and probably regular poor too. But no, I've been patiently collecting pieces here and there.
