Kara, an Atlanta homeowner whose 1911 Arts and Crafts home was recently featured on This Old House, knew that her home's sad, leaning staircase was in need of a renovation, for appearances and for safety's sake.
Here's how it looked prior to renovation.

To see its updated appearance, read more.
To fix the sagging staircase, Kara reinforced it, and then decided to use vintage pine for the wainscoting and handrail. Kara planed, sanded, and shellacked the pine herself. From start to finish, Kara only paid $750 for this renovation. Nicely done!

wow!
1what a difference!!!
i prefer the before... it has character and makes me feel intrigued.
2oooh gorgeous!! it looks so open after being renovated.
3Goodness that gorgeous! My father does stairways...I bet he could do that. (now if he'd just buy me a two-story house, hmmm...)
4I think the wainscotting was a poor choice. It's too light in color and I liked the original baseboards. I also am not fond of the light stairfacings. The whole thing went from cottage to country for my taste. I do love the window though and thing it's improved from the green.
5Not at all to my taste but i do think this is a truly wonderful renovation, such a big change!
6Amazing! Job well-done!!!
7The after picture is gorgeous..
8WOW!
9I liked the before. I would have just fixed the staircase and perhaps cleaned up the paint job.
The after is bland and cookie cutter.
10What a transformation!
