One Grassroots Modern reader moved into a 1946 bungalow with a kitchen that was desperately begging for a makeover (see avocado green stove, gloomy cabinets, and dingy tiling). The homeowners whipped it into shape in record time with only $4,000 by ripping up old carpet, refinishing the hardwood floors, installing Ikea cabinets, and hunting down a great deal on a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The difference is truly unbelievable. The space is bright, airy, and modern, not cramped or somber. To see the transformation for yourself, read more.
Beautiful, right? Be sure to head over to Grassroots Modern to hear more about the project and see more photos!

wow...amazing! where/how did they find a good deal on a sub-zero?
1Wow! That looks amazing. My parents are remodeling their kitchen and my mom would have LOVED to find a sub-zero for less than $4k, not to mention their entire remodeling for less than that...!!
2They must be in the industry or something. I am having a little trouble wrapping my head around their costs. But it looks great.

If you follow the link above and look below at comment #4, the owner gives a run-down of costs. It seems impossible, but when you realize how much of their own manpower was used you realize where costs really start to get crazy.
4They actually got it second hand. It was an old white one and they had a new stainless steel face cut for it. They are the first entry for our affordable modern kitchen contest over at Grassrootsmodern.com. We should have lots more great affordable entries coming.
Here is more info about the contest. http://grassrootsmodern.com/contests/
5Ugly before ugly after.
6To be honest, I'm partial to both.
7I like the openness of the after, but I'm not crazy about the cabinets. They look cheap to me.
8I think it looks heaps better! Wow!
9I like it!!
10I'm not too fond of either. And I hate that olive green oven...yuck!
11looks much better after of course but a bit boring. no personality.
12I think it looks great!! The only
thing I hate about Ikea cabinets,
they are very thin(that's why they're
inexpensive). It looks cleaner to me.
And for the person who said it
13was ugly before and after,
you have no taste =) !!
i llike the white cabinets!
14the after is modern and beautiful, but were it my kitchen i would have remodeled in the direction of it's original charm. i like the character of the before. --that's just me. like i said, the after is still beautiful and i would not complain were it mine!
15yes, amazing how taking the before picture at the end of the kitchen that will make it look the most crowded then taking the after picture at the end that will make it look the most spacious makes a difference. I would like to see how the ugly end turned out without having to visit another website...
16I'd like it better if the angle of the before and after photos was the same.
I really like the after, but I can't compare since you're presumably looking at the other end of the kitchen in that shot.
