While chair rails do have a practical function (protecting the wall from scuffs from the backs of chairs), they're also just a beautiful accent to a room and have a decorative purpose as well. But, of course, it's an extra expense, and most renters can't install them. So, I love how this homeowner has mimicked the look of a chair rail by painting two tones on the wall.

Mine is in my dining room. I don't really like it; I think it awkwardly separates the room. I also want more wall space in my dining room for my framed Pearl Jam vinyl collection!
1I have them in my kitchen and downstairs bathroom. The top half is wallpaper, separated by a wooden chair rail, and the bottom wall is painted white (like most of the rest of the walls in our house).
2we have a chair rail in our dining room - the bottom is painted white and the top is a nice shade of blue. we also have a chair rail/wainscoting in our downstairs bathroom
3I installed chair rails in the hallway because the kids kept touching the walls and leaving prints. I was able to paint the lower half with a sturdier paint and the rails a glossy white. The kids actually started grabbing/touching the rail more than the wall! It made the difference because I was constantly cleaning/re-painting before that!
4I have it in my dining room and I like the way it looks. It is the same wood/finish as the hardwood floors so it compliments nicely.
5we have an open living space so to separate the dining area from the living room area, we pained two tones in one - we live in an apt or else i would've loved to install real chair rail

6We have one in our Son's room. His room is blue on top (including the ceiling) and green on bottom with a white chair rail in between. It's very crisp and clean looking, I love it.
7I painted one in my room to have a pretty accent just above my bed and desk. I also have a thinner painted trim high on the wall and ceiling so when I wake up I kinda feel like I'm in my own little box
