This weekend, when I stopped by the Berkeley Anthropologie, I was pleasantly surprised by the window display. Using old books (I'm hoping that these were books that would've been recycled, not ones that people still wanted to read), those clever Anthropologie folks folded individual pages, and then strung the books through their binding to hang them. They remind me a bit of paper chandeliers.
To get a closer look, read more.

I first saw this technique used by an Etsy artist, though her books were meant as wall hangings, with the book covers serving as the frames. Do you like this idea?

Book-a-gami! Not sure if I like it... very interesting and sculptural, but the book lover in me is slightly appalled at seeing book pages folded like that. One of first thought that came to mind was the pages yellowing from direct light
1I love this idea!
2I agree with Punk Glam Queen, it breaks my heart when people ruin books.
3All those poor books! I agree with both Akpril and Punk Glam Queen, ruining books breaks my heart.
4A part of me feels sad to see books used in this fashion.
Are we now a post-literate society officially?
5I don't think they're ruined at all. I like them. They just have folded pages. If you go to any goodwill, you'll see hundreds of neglected books no one will ever see again. I like this. I like how you can make them look shaped based on how you fold them.
6My Dad has way too many books. This would be a perfect way to recycle them.
7Half Price Books throws away TONS of books that cannot be resold. This would be a much better alternate than filling up a landfill.
iv actually been doing this for some time. its fun! and i dont consider it ruining the books, i use book covers and make new sketchbooks then im left the the inside so i do this, instead of tossing it im creating something new, not ruining it.
8I actually love it! It seems like I've been seeing lots of interesting window displays lately. A couple months ago, a downtown Austin building had strings of origami paper cranes hanging from a window. I was inspired and tried to make cranes for my own apartment, but I got tired of folding after I'd made one string of cranes.
9Very cute!
10the anthropologie in chicago has a similar window display - spirals of old books overlaid on one another. they have lots of muted fall colors that flow into each other. it was really beautiful!
11It may be heart breaking to see books used this way, But I think It's great they up cycle these books instead of seeing them thrown into a landfill. You would not believe the thousands of books that will end up in the trash..
