In Rimrock Ranch, a home near Palm Springs designed by architect Lloyd Russell, which was recently featured in the LA Times, spare modern architecture lends an urban style to the cowboy roots of the desert. Here, the steps to a kitchen set between two suites have a dual purpose. The wood planks were extended to serve as a side table for the rustic couch beside the staircase, relieving the need for additional furnishings. Rather than cluttering up the room, this clever idea keeps things minimal, and the attention on the bold desert display of antlers on the wall. Of course, it's convenient that there happens to be a couch next to the stairs, but would you like these stairs in your home if it made sense architecturally?

I would like it better if it was painted. However, what if someone has very heavy footsteps and ends up sending your bag of chips to the floor? The coffee table part doesn't seem to stable since there's no support.
1I agree, soapbox, I think this needs support on the side next to the seating in case someone were to step too far to that side!
2That is neat! I love funky details like that.
3Ditto to soapbox and sgdish. It seems terribly easy for someone to smash your drink or food or whatnot with a careless step.
4yep I'm with those who say it doesn't seem very functional.. too easy to knock things over.. plus who wants to walk where your drink/food/knick knacks are? and I don't like that it and the couch take up that whole end of the room... certainly there had to be a better spot for that couch?
5Love it!
6i actually really like the look of the table - and i think that it really gives a lot more storage space than just one tier.
7i love this
8and i love the natural color
it goes with their rustic look and antlers
So awesome.
9"would you like these stairs in your home if it made sense architecturally?".......no
