Ever remember burning your bare feet on a black top in the Summer as a kid? The black color of the paved surface absorbs the light particles that it hits, exciting the pavement's particles, making the black surface warmer because its particles are moving faster. Contrarily, white surfaces reflect light, so they are cooler. 
So for those of you living in a warm climate, think about painting your home light colors, which will absorb less light, meaning less need for turning on that a/c. And, those of you living in a cold climate should think about painting your home darker colors, which will absorb the light, meaning less need for turning on your heater! Maybe Orlando Bloom should consider repainting his black house, and I should alter my poll to read "Chicken or the Egg or the Climate"?

Great idea for anyone not living near the Arctic Circle. Dark painted rooms and short winter days don't really work, unless of course you're going for a cave like feel.

Twink! I agree. I don't really care if it's warm or cold, my mental health is more important.
I'm going to keep the colors light and happy. I would go crazy if I painted the walls a dark color. Think about it: 280 days of rain per year and very, very short winter days. I guess if you
live in the USA/Canada or Southern Europe, these suggestions can be great.
2I live in New England so the summers are hot and the winters are very cold. I wouldn't really help me out too much to paint my house one way or another. I really prefer light colors no matter what too. I can't stand when it's dark outside so I don't want it to be dark inside.
3I would just paint my house in a color that makes me happy and not worry too much about the climate. I don't think dark colors would really help all that much for winter...good insulation on the other hand...
There's this one house down the road from me that I'm absolutely in love with because it's so different from the drab color scheme of the rest of the neighborhood (my brown brown brown rental included). Light blue brick, darker blue paint, and ivory trim. The original owners must been rebels back when these 'burbs were built.
