A few years ago, I watched a contractor install a swamp cooler (also known as an evaporative cooler) on an elderly woman's roof. Her home, which had previously been uncomfortably, even dangerously hot, was given immediate relief when the evaporative cooler was turned on. Evaporative coolers work by drawing exterior air into special pads soaked with water. The air is cooled by evaporation, and then circulated throughout a room or home. Evaporative coolers, which work best in hot, dry climates, are significantly less expensive and more energy efficient to run than air conditioning units. Do you have one in your home?

no, but I do have a "whole house fan"
1info on whole house fans, which seem simpler than this swamp cooler thing -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whole_house_fan
2lawchick--awesome that you have a whole house fan! another smart way to go for energy-efficient home cooling.
3I grew up with swamp cooling, but have central a/c in my own home. Swamp cooling definitely uses less energy, but doesn't help much when summer monsoon storms roll in.
4We have both a swamp cooler and an a/c unit. We wait as long as possible to start using the a/c, but once the monsoon clouds start building, the swamp cooler is next to useless.
5No. I see that it works best in hot and dry climates. That is sooo un-Pennsylvanian. PA is hazy, hot & humid. I will look into that whole house fan idea though. Thanks, lawchick.
6I've never heard of one of those. Very interesting.
7I have never heard of one, but they sound genius (and eco-chic!)
8no, wth is it
9We saw a lot of the swamp coolers when we lived in San Diego county, but they don't work back east.
Never lived in a house with AC. Recently acquired a couple of energy star window boxes we turn on once in a blue moon.
10I grew up in the desert in Grand Junction, Colorado - we used to make fun of people who make installed AC instead of swamp coolers - in the desert, swamp coolers work so much better!!
But now I'm in NYC... there's no way a swamp cooler would do any good!
11I used to have one when I lived in Arizona - it was wonderful until the REALLY hot heat hit then you had to have AC. But where I live now, in Seattle, I just don't think a swamp cooler will work!
12I also have a "whole house fan" like Lawchick...I don't use it too often, but it really does help in the summer.
13I said No - I am not totally sure, but I highly doubt there is one on the roof of my building
14This is interesting!I am from N.Y,so probably would not do me any good.
